Trump cancels Denmark meeting over Greenland not being for sale. What an awful timeline.
"Greenland is not for sale," she told Greenlandish media on Sunday. "Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously."

So there is a subtext to the reluctance to greenlight new projects that I feel none of these stories really capture. A lot of this activity at the Supervisor level is constituent-driven.
Concur on that, and Reason does mention the local community opposition. But that opposition is misplaced, and people are just hurting themselves by opposing new housing. The Tech Bros are going to live there whether the locals like it or not, and those Tech Bros' big Google salaries mean they can outbid the locals for the limited number of apartments. It would be better for the locals to maximize the size of the new buildings. The Tech Bros are more likely to move into those new apartments than the existing older ones, and that lowers the demand (and hence the rent) for those older places. By artificially limiting supply, the locals are basically bidding themselves out of living in their own neighborhoods. The solution of "gentrification" is not to limit the supply of new housing; it's to build a lot of new housing to satisfy the demand and keep rents low.

Meanwhile Trump would sell Puerto Rico for $24 worth of beads and trinkets.

This is manifestly not how the process is unfolding. When people are evicted or burned out of their legacy housing, where exactly are they supposed to live for the 18 months it takes to build the new units? The notion that building $1,000/sq ft luxury apartments will somehow relieve housing pressure on a group of people who already had homes they could afford is sort of fantastical. The old building was rent controlled, the new one will not be. It doesn't matter that X number of units are reserved for renters at or below 55% of the SF Bay Area median income; the median income in SF is $96,000 (a number that will only go up as more Tech Bros converge), many of these displaced residents are on fixed incomes and paying rents based on 1979 rates. Below-market-rate units in the Mission can still be four figures/mo for a 400 sq ft 1-br, which doesn't really help a family of 4 that got booted from a legacy 2-br unit.So there is a subtext to the reluctance to greenlight new projects that I feel none of these stories really capture. Although, the laundromat guy made out quite well. He secured the permits late last year, but then sold the property to a hotelier for $13 million.

Somewhere else where they can afford the rent. This is manifestly not how the process is unfolding. When people are evicted or burned out of their legacy housing, where exactly are they supposed to live for the 18 months it takes to build the new units?
If supply increases while demand remains the same, then price falls. That's how supply and demand works. Limiting the supply of housing is only going to make prices go up—not down. And while those luxury apartments may not be affordable for everyone, they will increase the supply of available housing for those who can, and that will help lower the overall price because the people who can afford the "$1,000/sq ft luxury apartments" are right now living in housing that might go for lower rents if the supply were adequate to meet demand. The notion that building $1,000/sq ft luxury apartments will somehow relieve housing pressure on a group of people who already had homes they could afford is sort of fantastical.
Good. Rent control is an abomination. If someone loses out on a rent-controlled apartment, that sucks for them, but I'm not going to feel any sympathy for someone losing out on something that shouldn't exist. The old building was rent controlled, the new one will not be.
That's too bad for them, but they need to find somewhere else to live where they can afford the rent. That absolutely will not be anywhere in SF so long as the politicians and activists keep a stranglehold on the construction of new housing. You can't solve a demand-driven shortage by artificially limiting supply. All that does is drive the price even higher. It doesn't matter that X number of units are reserved for renters at or below 55% of the SF Bay Area median income; the median income in SF is $96,000 (a number that will only go up as more Tech Bros converge), many of these displaced residents are on fixed incomes and paying rents based on 1979 rates. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/state/ ... 89557.htmlWhile serving a lenient jail sentence in Palm Beach County, wealthy financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was allowed to leave jail for “work release” — at an office at his own organization, the Florida Science Foundation.
But at the foundation, according to a newly filed lawsuit, Epstein and his web of associates repeatedly arranged for sex with at least two girls, including one he met when she was 17.
“Jeffrey Epstein, through his brazen and powerful organization, was quite literally able to commit federal sex trafficking offenses at his work release office, during his jail sentence,” according to the lawsuit by a woman identified only as Kaitlyn Doe.

So really, in case anyone was confused about why Jewish Democrats weren’t rushing to decry Omar for her antisemitism. Trump should have cleared that up for everyone.

One person hates Jews.
The other person questioned why a jewish person would vote for the person that hates jews.
