The Trump administration is threatening to impose hundreds of thousands of dollars in civil penalties on immigrants who disobey deportation orders by seeking refuge in churches or elsewhere in the United States, according to federal officials.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Washington headquarters on Monday notified a woman seeking sanctuary in a North Carolina church that the agency intends to fine her more than $300,000. An immigrant in Colorado faces a fine of more than $500,000.

Repeatedly disobeying our laws has consequences?

There's no consequences there as the woman is penniless.

I was reading about Breitbart's traffic being down 75% since the last election so I went to see what they are pushing on the front page. Lots of outrage, and stills from, the new Miley Cyrus video.

In terms of things that really matter, what does this affect? Or are you really concerned that the principles the country were founded on are next?

Btw, part of the constitution has changed based on the times.

I'm sure people will start pushing that. Again, you can connect pretty much anything to hate or racism etc if you dig deep enough. What's next?

So you think there’s going to be a push to take away, say, freedom of speech, because people don’t want to celebrate someone who owned slaves? That seems like a stretch.

Out of curiosity, are you also concerned that freedom of the press will be attacked, as our president has continually railed against most of it? There would seem to be some similarities.

Just wait until everyone finds out that George Washington owned over 100 slaves and got his first one at 11 years old

Jefferson loved banging his slaves. He was anything but racist. He just owned slaves like nearly everyone else in that era of history.

What’s worrying is people wanting to just erase and forget history. Now people and places can get rid of whatever they want, but it is also my right to believe they are **** ing stupid for doing it as well.

Less than 25% of southerners owned slaves.

Who is wanting to erase and forget history? Getting rid of a celebration of a man doesn’t mean you denounce his ideas. Same with statues. In the times we live, with all the access we have to information, it’s lunacy to think that getting rid of a holiday or a statue somehow erases history.

These days are to remember history and ideas so as to learn from them and build upon them. So yes you are getting rid of a way for people to engage in learning or remembering our history, good or bad.

And personally, I don’t really have a problem with statues. Some of them are pretty cool. However, if a town or state or university decides they don’t want it anymore because it’s not representative, then so be it.

Well, if we’d like to look at it this way, the town has switched from learning about Jefferson, which they’ve done for many years, to learning about slavery and emancipation. Although I think you’re overstating how much engagement there is with history in these holidays.
