It’s also an argument used by the uneducated.

Less government social services does not mean people are advocating to not help others.

Indeed. Religiosity is positively correlated with charitable activities. Religious people give substantially more money to charity, and donate more of their own time to charities, than non-religious people. People from poorer, more-rural red states also on average donate a greater percentage of their income to charity than do people from wealthier, more-urbanized blue states.

I'm excited to hear more about this immigration plan designed by Kushner and Miller because the details available now are hilarious.
Between the lines: The legislation will change asylum processes, fund more border security and change who qualifies for a green card. Overall, the total number of green cards issued each year — roughly 1.1 million — will remain unchanged.

By the numbers: Administration officials claimed that the system would result in an increase of $500 billion in tax revenue by 2029, due to more immigrants who are likely to be employed in well-paid jobs paying taxes.
The move would more than quadruple the number of immigrants admitted because of their work-related skills, while dramatically slashing the number of immigrants admitted because of family ties. Currently, approximately 12 percent of immigrants are admitted based on employment and skills, while 66 percent are admitted based on family connections.

Those percentages, under the new plan, would shift to 57 percent and 33 percent, respectively. Ten percent of immigrants would be admitted on humanitarian or other grounds, but the plan would end the visa lottery program.
The average yearly wage of immigrant families currently is approximately $43,000. The officials said immigrants admitted based on education and skills would have an average family income of $126,000, and they would expect the average yearly wage of all immigrant families to rise to roughly $96,000.
HIGH PAYING JOBS DON'T GROW ON TREES YA ****. Aside from there being a 0% chance that something like this would pass, in theory it would simply result in high paying jobs going to immigrants (at a lower cost) and put more Americans into low paying jobs and/or government subsidies. Dumb people are dumb.

So people who live in states donate money commensurate with their belief in how much of a role government should play in such things. So while blue staters don't give as much to charity, they pay considerably more in taxes that support such a role for government. That tracks.

Trump signs order to protect U.S. networks from foreign espionage, a move that appears to target China
Amid a deepening trade war with China, President Trump on Wednesday declared a “national emergency” to protect U.S. communications networks in a move that gives the federal government broad powers to bar American companies from doing business with certain foreign suppliers — including the Chinese firm Huawei.

Trump declared the emergency in the form of an executive order that says foreign adversaries are exploiting vulnerabilities in U.S. telecom technology and services. It singles out economic and industrial espionage as areas of particular concern.

“The President has made it clear that this Administration will do what it takes to keep America safe and prosperous, and to protect America from foreign adversaries who are actively and increasingly creating and exploiting vulnerabilities in information and communications technology infrastructure and services in the United States,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

The order authorizes the commerce secretary to block transactions involving communications technologies built by firms controlled by a foreign adversary that puts U.S. security at “unacceptable” risk — or poses a threat of espionage or sabotage to networks that underpin the day-to-day running of vital public services.
The way the Chinese handle intellectual property is abominable. If a foreign company wants to use a Chinese factory using some kind of patented tech or process, they have to separately register the IP with the Chinese government.... who in turn more or less freely distributes that patented tech or process to any other competing Chinese manufacturer making similar goods. (Well, not 'freely' as in 'at no charge'.) This registration is not the same as actually filing for patent protection, it's just, you know, giving the Chinese government the keys to the safe, as it were.

At a previous employer, we got a licensing & manufacturing deal from a big entertainment company largely on the strength of a patented electronic greebly thingamajig in an RFID chip. Lasted about six months before we started seeing bootleg products using the same tech. Something approaching 60% of Chinese patents are actually blatant ripoffs of foreign IP. (That number is outdated by a couple years, might be more today)

And I'd bet that most of that charitable giving is to churches or other religious charities.

When the govt gives you something, they just want your vote. When religious charities do, they want a shot at your soul...

That's why we need immigration reform. Got to replace the declining numbers of native births...

I created 3 so I did my job to increase the breed and you're at replacement level, right?

I think the childless and under-childed need to step up.

I would put money down on the US being a predominantly Spanish speaking country and the UK being predominantly Arabic speaking in 200 years. One of those things that makes you wish for an afterlife... Desperately wanting to know what transpires after you're gone. :)

What’s next, Michael - I mean Michelle  Obama is running?

Funny stuff in the KDKA/WPXI Facebook comment section. And before one of you says something, all you Trump haters were the ones yucking it up in 2015/2016 - until he won.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ina-s-rise
The Trump administration is pulling out the big guns in its push to slow China’s rise, with potentially devastating consequences for the rest of the world.

The White House on Wednesday initiated a two-pronged assault on China: barring companies deemed a national security threat from selling to the U.S., and threatening to blacklist Huawei Technologies Co. from buying essential components. If it follows through, the move could cripple China’s largest technology company, depress the business of American chip giants from Qualcomm Inc. to Micron Technology Inc., and potentially disrupt the rollout of critical 5G wireless networks around the world.
