Previously he’s been spotted wearing an Arsenal jersey and now Barron Trump, the son of U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, could be the future of U.S. Soccer.

Okay, that’s taking it a little too far but still, he obviously loves the game.

News has arrived that the 11-year-old has joined D.C. United’s U-12 team as part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and is listed as a midfielder.

During the White House’s Annual Easter Egg Roll in April he was seen wearing an Arsenal jersey. He also spoke with players from D.C. United and Barron has also been seen kicking a ball around the White House lawn.

Imagine if you put up a couple of goals on that lawn. What a lovely pitch that is for your backyard…

Barron has been given the number 81 jersey and has played in four games this season, with DCU’s next home game at RFK Stadium on Saturday against PA Classics.

So strange that we now live in a day where the POTUS is tougher on professional athletes than actual nazis, white supremacists and Vladimir Putin.
    Is anyone surprised?

It would have been interesting to see how a Sanders White House would’ve handled sports teams’ visits.

    Because he probably flunked PE?

He would take all their rings and redistribute them to all the other sports teams.

It was nice of Trump to include in his ramblings about the NFL how they aren't allowed to hit hard anymore without a flag... just a few days after Hernandez's brain tested to be Stage 3 CTE. Good stuff, Don.

This is a long, but really enthralling read from Andrew Sullivan, basically describing how the country has descended into full-blown tribalism over the last half-century. He really does a nice job of setting the stage for the current political standpoint, in a non-partisan manner.
Sully is pretty great. Been a fan of his writing for a really long time. But sort of take exception to one bit early on:
Even in successful modern democracies like Britain and Spain, the tribes of Scots and Catalans still threaten a viable nation-state. In all these places, the people involved have been full citizens of their respective nations, but their deepest loyalty is to something else.
The problem here is that Scots and Catalans did not choose to be part of Britain and Spain respectively. It's not like they all of a sudden got all goopy about nationalism. They've never been at ease as part of the national whole. You walk around somewhere like Barcelona, and the apartments and businesses are replete with Estelada flags hanging off window sills. Same with the Basques. They just aren't really on board with being a state in a larger country. The last time the Catalans had an independence referendum was in 2014, and we were there around the time the Spanish Congress turned down the request to recognize the referendum legally. Demonstrations galore, it was nuts.* They had fairly low turnout, but every district in Catalonia sided with 'leave', and support was around 80%. That's not just tribalism.

After the honeymoon period following the 2010 World Cup victory, there was some internal resentment expressed. Something like 8 or 9 of the starting 11 from that team were Catalans, and at least one other was Basque. So people kind of balk at calling it a 'Spanish' victory.

We joke that we spent two weeks in Barcelona and San Sebastián, but the only part of Spain we saw was on the train ride between the two.

    * That said, the lead item on the news for three nights in a row was the transfer ban FIFA had levied on FC Barcelona. The news would open up with five minutes of panel discussion about the ban and how unjust it was, then they'd be like, "In other news, there were independence riots last night."

It's stupid, especially in a sport like hockey where 20% of the player on the ice any given night might be from Europe.

We're continuing to build an air tight case that Trump supporters are dumb.

Re that Sullivan article. I read the junger book about it tribalism that he references. I didnt finish the whole article, but I don't think the tribalism he's talking about because relates to trumps rise. The David brooks column yesterday that talked about some guy that was around during the pat Buchanan campaign made more sense. Especially after listening to a Katy tur interview later that day.

And don't forget that it was Socialists (real ones, not Democrats) during WWI that started this at baseball games. Back when Socialism was super Nationalistic.

They also wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.
    But don't tell conservatives that.

They aren't though. I'm sorry I just don't feel bad for players of today that know what they are getting into playing a contact sport.

Yeah I’m sure Trump, who is afraid to confront anybody in his White House directly, would call Michael Bennett a dodint to his face.
