You know the world has changed when a bunch of straight, white male (+obhave) hockey fans are calmly discussing transgender issues.

I'm just not getting it right, am I! :x

So do you say gender is a mindset, not a physical thing?
Maybe think of it this way:
sex - male or female (and obviously all the intersex options in between)
gender - masculine and feminine

Sex is biological. Gender is more about characterisitics, and how society defines as masculine or feminine.
OK. I have a friend. He's a male. Straight. Beard. But he's kinda feminine. What does that make him? Give me one of those gender names so I can shove it in his face.

haha you can be feminine male without assigning a different gender to yourself. If he identifies as a cisgender male, than that is what he is! Gender identities are self assigned, never assigned by someone else.

I'm sure he doesn't even know what the cis thing is. He thinks he's normal. Can't wait to tell him.

You would be telling him that he is "normal", cisgendered means that he is both male in gender and sex.

I'm already bored with the narratives, and we haven't even hit 2016.

People are obsessed see with putting a label on everything. Unfortunately, gender didn't escape that.

I don't think labels are important. I think understanding people and not labeling them incorrectly whether it is labeling them as having a mental illness or labeling them as creeps or confused or any other word that means "Different from what I'm used to and they've got this whole life thing backwards and it's freaking me out" is a nicer way to live.

That's just what I think.
I think the gender indenties are a way for those who are not cis-gender to try and find a way to fit in, to find a word that describes who they are. I don't think those labels should be troublesome to other people. Pronouns are very important, and the trans individual will usually tell you how they prefer to be referred to.

The dangerous labels are "freak," "mental" and things along those lines, not the labels the individual uses themselves. Vocab like that is what makes trans indiviuals growing up feel like they have no support.
I don't think I think of gender identities as the same as labels. I always think of labeling as not knowing or understanding someone and drawing conclusions. Gender identity might be a label but one the person asks for. It might say something more than a label.
I guess it's the connotation in my head. Idk if that's confusing. I will try to reword it.

Hey! I'm not a White male!
Where is the cry emoticon?

I'm not voting for anyone this election or ever again hopefully.

But I loooooooove election season. It's so exciting in a "We're all in this together" kind of way. I only ever get that feeling during the Olympics and the Trayvon Martin / Zimmerman case. The debates! The slander! THE CHAOS!

It's going DOWN all the way to TOWN.

I agree. Understanding the person is a lot more important than labeling.

TRIGGERED....

What do you mean cisgender is "normal"?!?!? THIS IS PART OF THE PROBLEM!!! Being transgendered is just as normal as being cisgendered!

Wait, is that the same Toure that used to write about hip hop/rap for Rolling Stone and Spin in the 1990s? Now he's a political commentator?

Much like the old MTV VJ Kennedy who is on FoxNews as an anchor Toure was originally brought in at MSNBC to be a cultural commentator and shifted into being a political analyst.
