There is still a huge black market for that stuff in Colorado and Washington. Just like in NYC there is a huge black market for cigarettes.

Why? The punitive taxes on them.

adam lanza illegally acquired weapons, and they were a few feet from where he slept. does that qualifier matter at all?
TIL that murdering a legal gun owner and taking their weapons apparently constitutes legal acquisition of said guns.

He did not own any of the guns he used at Sandy Hook. He broke something like a dozen laws, most related to illegal possession, before he even showed up at the school.
In related news if the wife was a K-1 (fiance) VISA holder it was illegal for her to possess firearms.

because guns are incredibly dangerous and other people are using them to kill people.

it's not an ideal solution but no solution ever is. Whenever you make legislation like this, you're going to negatively affect a portion of the population...that's just how life is. If outlawing guns means they have to go to the grocery store more, I'm not losing any sleep over it
They aren't dangerous for the vast majority of people that use them properly.
Conversely, they're very dangerous if you happen to have one aimed in your direction by any one of a dozen zealots of multiple faiths, persuasion, and ethnicities that have been in the news in the last, oh, year.

The prior incarnation of this board actually had one of those. So it's not as far removed from our daily lives as one might think.
A lot of things can be dangerous if someone wants to use it improperly.

I'm almost half convinced that our current president has stock in Smith and Wesson because every time he says anything about stricter gun control, guns are flying off the shelf at a record pace.

Any time in US history that the government has made something illegal or hard to buy it has created black markets that ordinary citizens used frequently. So we should ignore history because it suits your narrative?

let's start with this...

in colorado, there is virtually no risk in buying black market weed. in fact, once your transaction is complete, there is zero risk, none. even if you run down the street swinging a baggie over your head. and let's say, hypothetically, there was risk. you are buying something that is meant to be consumed within a reasonably short time frame. you are not going to have it in your side table for the rest of your life.

In a historic move, Defense Secretary Ash Carter on Thursday announced that the military will open all combat jobs to women.

"There will be no exceptions," Carter said at a briefing, adding that meant women could serve as Army Rangers, Green Berets and Navy SEALs.

While not willing to state for certain, early findings are that the shooter was "radicalized" and has been found to be in touch with at least one person who has connections with Islamic terrorist organizations and is being watched by the FBI.

Cigarettes... I think it's pretty clear that damn near everything that has high punitive taxes associated with it ends up creating an incentive for avoiding that process... (should we mention Corporate Taxes?)

(assuming "hard to buy" also implies "more expensive")

The same could be said for firearms. A policeman can't just walk up to you and demand to see if you bought the gun legally.

Native American Indian tribes are glad you consider Tobacco "niche". They make a really nice profit on them.

Oh yeah, that reminds me... Gambling.
