Speaking of January 6th committee, man did that just fade away immediately. Haven't heard a peep about it since. Not that I had much faith to begin with, but doesn't seem like Dems are interested in doing anything but putting out political headlines from it.

IIRC it was on the outs before that when they cut from primetime hearings.

A grand jury just subpoenaed one of the Trump WH lawyers with regards to that investigation.

During the primary a local restaurant had a huge Mastriano placard hanging by the entrance. They've since taken it down, but I bet it goes up again in a couple weeks. Lots of Mastriano yard signs up in this area (no shock) but no Oz signs yet. Online chatter is along the lines of "Oz wasn't my choice, but I'll vote for him over that communist."

I use my Dad as my looking glass into the world of conservative crazy. He's really heavy into the IRS right now. They're upping their staff by like 85,000. My understanding is that was their 10-year plan but they received some extra funding so they accelerated it. Dad, who doesn't even have a job/income, has been posting about how this is a plot to...I'm not even clear, really. To build an army of accountants to do more audits so they can take property, I guess. Anyway, today he posted a picture of a Nazi saying it was the IRS's new uniform. I thought that was rich coming from a Trump guy.

They announced that they are having additional hearings in September and will release a report before November. The DOJ investigation seems to be going now. Lots of subpoenas to Trump people to appear before the grand jury but we won't hear the details unless they press charges.

I've heard this same thing from my Q-Aunt. There was a IRS job posting that listed "carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary" as a requirement. Of course this isn't anything new and special agents in the Criminal Investigation unit of the IRS have always carried a firearm but that doesn't matter. The IRS is militarizing to come and get us to ... continue paying taxes I guess?

are they upping it TO 85k or BY 85k? according to Wikipedia they’d have 74k right now?

while I don’t think a tax apocalypse is going to happen if they literally more than double their staff, I don’t want this to become a thing where they’re gonna make sure I report every little casino winning I make

edit looks like they’re gonna double their roster
Natasha Sarin, a counselor for tax policy and implementation at the Treasury Department, said that for Americans making less than $400,000 a year, their chances of being audited wouldn’t increase from typical levels in recent years.

Instead, Sarin said, average taxpayers should have an improved experience filing their taxes because the funds would allow the agency to staff up. In the first half of 2021, there were fewer than 15,000 employees available to answer nearly 200 million calls, which is one person for every 13,000 calls, according to Treasury Department figures.

Anyone that's ever dealt with the IRS could tell you how badly understaffed they've been

I've also heard they're supposed to be actually auditing the loopholes all the extremely rich use to get out of paying their taxes.

Aren't winnings automatically taxed if it's above a certain amount? (Meaning the casino itself would hold back the taxes when paying out).

Casinos are required to file a form regarding your earnings, but they are never required to withhold tax. That is because gambling winnings can be offset by gambling losses.

:thumb: I don't know why I thought that they withheld the taxed amount from the winner. Just goes to show that I've never hit big.

Trump is privately pushing the theory the attack on an Ohio FBI office by a Trump supporter was a false flag, report says

Imagine martyring yourself for Donald Trump and then he denies you and labels you a false flag. Lol.
