It does matter for two reasons. First, the precise terminology and definitions matter because Beto O'Rourke is specfically calling for certain guns—but not all guns—to be banned. If you are going to argue that certain things of a class should be illegal while other certain things of that same class should not, then one needs to be able to precisely and intelligently differentiate the two classes of things. O'Rourke's statement—which was laughably wrong to the point where someone laughed at it—demonstrates that he does not have a reasonable basis to do so.

Second, O'Rourke's statement represents he is not being intellectually serious about what he has made a centerpiece of his campaign. If I were making a certain issue a highlight of my campaign to be governor of one of the largest and most populous states in the nation, I would know that issue cold, inside and out. I would know the language, I would know the history, and I would be able to rattle off facts on demand. O'Rourke's laughably wrong and ahistorical claim that claim that the AR-15 was "originally designed for use on the battlefields in Vietnam to penetrate an enemy soldier's helmet at 500 feet and knock him down dead" demonstrates that he has not bothered to actually educate himself on the topic. Not bothering to learn the facts on your centerpiece issue makes O'Rourke look like a total clownshoes (which he is).

I can get that people who don't know guns or care about the terminology don't really care. But for gun people, what Beto said would be every bit as silly as someone asserting in front of a room of car guys that the Honda Accord was originally designed to be a race car, or asserting in front of a room of pilots that the Boeing 737 was originally designed to be a military bomber. It's not just wrong, it's stupidly wrong.

From what I understand, not quite yet, although it did just get out of the paint shop:

It had supposedly also needed engine work, but it had been parked in NY with an engine removed, and the paint shop is in Louisiana, so I would assume the engines were done first because it obviously flew there.
