it’s complicated because yeah reason and the heckler are focusing on the wrong thing, but I can’t stand when Dems intentionally overdramatize things in an attempt to build support BECAUSE their opponents will latch on into any fudged details. It’s like yeah you’re dealing with dum dums but you’ll need the dum dums to listen if you want any change. But the dum dums stop listening as soon as they hear a lie, so why even bother with the fib?

like when AOC visited the illegal immigrant children who were locked up and there’s the series of photos of her bawling crying. It was a painfully transparent PR thing and conservatives love yelling “bullshit”. Don’t give them ammo with disingenuous rhetoric

no because I think you’re underestimating how easily internet conservatives can turn something like this into a dumb meme like “let’s go Brandon”

They were. What Beto said was an fictionally overdramatized statement. In a debate as heated as as gun rights, you need to be precise. The only way there will be any movement in gun control is if you get moderate conservatives to be willing to agree to cede some ground but they won’t budge if they see the Shysters of the world latch on to something like this

Now, I’m aware that I’m an extremist in this thread, but I don’t believe there is any context in which audibly laughing out loud while a politician is discussing the mass shooting of little children is acceptable.

I’d be okay with being proven wrong on that. But Beto not describing a gun correctly doesn’t fit the bill.

I never said it was acceptable. I think it’s abhorrent. But Beto saying that, triggering the guy to laugh then pushed Reason to waste time on the article. Don’t give them something to to cherry pick. It’s completely avoidable

Using dead children as cover for making hyperbolic statements is pretty gross, too.

yeah, it’s all disingenuous. And the gun debate, similar to the abortion debate, demands authenticity because it’s so controversial. There’s no need for it; the death of children is horrible on its own

It doesn’t really though, that’s just fodder for internet message board posts, like it matters that they ar doesn’t stand for automatic.

That said, who cares why beto got heckled, and who cares about beto calling the guy names.

It’s just funny that the magazine for weirdos did a piece standing up for a heckler. It’s just funny, it doesn’t mean anything, that’s just an amusing tidbit

being ok with that line is very lame imo. We’re at a time where tension in politics is at an alltime high. Giving anyone more reason to stop listening is willfully ignoring the heart of the issues we have today. This is one thing that annoys me about the strong lefties on here. They’re quick to post a dumb MTG tweet but say “don’t care” when a liberal politician says or does something dumb. Lies are bad, regardless of who says them. Justifying lies is how we got here in the first place

I absolutely agree, it’s actively looking for a reason to disengage

It’s like conservatives are being 10/10 dumb and liberals are being 4/10 dumb. It’s not nearly the same amount of dumb but it’s enough dumb that it should be called out

The fact that conservative's can't hear out an argument because they want to play the "literal" game is beyond annoying.

The real story is Beto calling a moron a ****

Obviously that's what he was laughing at, but who laughs when someone is talking about a shooting like that?

Gas prices should keep going down:
Oil prices tumbled Monday after China’s central bank unexpectedly cut rates after data showed economic activity slowed broadly in July, including consumer spending and factory output, reigniting concerns of a global downturn.

Signs of further cooling in the world’s second-largest economy, already under stain from China’s zero-covid policy and a real estate crisis, alarmed energy markets. The prospect of lower demand sent oil prices sliding 5 percent — pushing West Texas Intermediate crude to $87 a barrel.

The July data signaled that the post-lockdown recovery is fizzling amid an array of economic challenges, including the enduring threat of the coronavirus pandemic. Similar to the conflicting priorities that central bankers from other nations are facing, Chinese officials are eyeing rising debt and inflation. But a sputtering domestic economy appeared to take priority.
