media coverage is one thing but the US government trying to make a prisoner exchange for the celeb and not the teacher is entirely different

Right. My point is I don't think either of them is worth letting a criminal go free to facilitate their return. The white old guy or the black lesbian sports lady, whatever, plant/grow.

The media's actions are as expected.

I don’t understand your point. It’s not good that Biden is making a dumb trade. But that news was met with shoulder shrugs on here. It’s lame

I'm not commenting at all on the trade. I'm just saying that of course a celebrity/athlete is garnering attention from the media and being used as a political ploy and not some random teacher. They aren't comparable.

Wait, the hell is going on now?

This whole controversy was driven by the Biden admin not being willing to trade with Putin. Biden is not the one "trying" to make the prisoner exchange. Putin was, and then Biden was getting criticized for not taking the bait. Now we want to criticize him for being willing to negotiate on this with Putin?

Florida now hiring veteran wives as teachers. No schooling needed… can I get all my student loans forgiven then? Cause clearly my degree is worthless.

(I already knew it was worthless)

I went to my new school the other day to move some stuff in and was talking to one of the principals. She said they just hired a new math teacher who doesn’t have a teaching degree and has no experience. She said at this point, if you seem nice and aren’t a criminal, you’re going to be hired. Things will only get worse.

I think you missed the news that Biden was offering arms dealer Victor Bout in exchange for Griner and Whelan

Oh I see, I didn't realize people were actually mad about the prisoner exchange, and that's what actually prompted this. I was only aware that people (out in the world, not here) were mad that the Biden admin was not making any movement towards Putin's terms.

Also, lol at that first post from shad about the guy with "multiple citizenships" with the discharge, so yeah, that's a spy.

I saw somebody mention this and was really hoping that it was a joke.

Nope. It's not. You just have to peg some weekend Coast Guard flunky and, bam, you can teach in Florida. Which should provide, at least, an infinite supply of "A Florida man..." memes for our future enjoyment...

Yep. Districts are taking anyone out of school too, which isn't always optimal. My wife is going through "new teacher orientation" this week, and although it's normal to have a ton of newly minted teachers, it seemed most were about 21 or 22. Very raw and well, not very professional.

They had a small group activity where a lead instructor was modeling a math lesson and told the students (my wife and three other teachers) to turn to the page number derived from adding 35 and 45 (which is a review technique). Then they were asked to highlight the page number with pink if the sum is an odd number or yellow if it's an even number. Two picked pink, two picked yellow.

Of course, it was the younger ones that either a)can't add or b) don't know even/odd numbers. And they will be teaching math in a live classroom in two weeks.

(My wife turned to page 80 and colored it yellow fwiw)

It's almost like the Florida state government has made it so miserable to be a teacher in that state they are now resorting to just letting anyone with a pulse teach.

Don't get me wrong... the pickings are slim most everywhere, but yeesh. That's some scary stuff.

I’m surprised they’re not trying to get local NRA leaders to be teachers

To be fair, teaching 3rd graders only requires a 4th grade education...they should be fine...

To get them to your typical Floridian level of education? Yes.

To do it correctly and get the best out of a kid? No.
