I remember middle school we had an actual legit sex ed class...so that would have been like 7th grade.

We also had "sex-ed" starting in middle school. Parents could sign something to say they didn't want you sitting in on those couple days of health class. I put "sex-ed" because it was abstinence centered. Very much the stereotype of "if you have sex you will get pregnant or get an STI" without covering anything about birth control or how one gets pregnant exactly.

My mother was an OB/GYN nurse practitioner who focused on the gynecology side and not the obstetrics side. Over the years, she worked at a number of places, including an STD clinic. I think I knew the nuts and bolts of how sex worked from a fairly young age just from her discussing her cases with my grandfather (who was a retired doctor). I could name pretty much every common STD well before I was 10 years old, for example.

The instructor of the mandatory health class at my high school always had a local health expert come in every year for the sex-ed portion in order to discuss certain topics like sexually transmitted diseases and give the local perspective on what was out there. Guess who that was.

Texas lunges into center of battles over personal freedom, starting with abortion and sodomy

Someone needs to remind Texas that sodomy is a preventative for abortion.

Only dog I bang is your mom niece, can't help much, sorry.
Well, the niece I'm wheeling has a 3-year-old that is roughly the same height as MiMH, so it was a simple misunderstanding.

What tif said was that this push doesn't have the kind of reach beyond true believers that abortion did/does.
They're the same people
This is pretty much what I'm talking about:

The abortion issue has female advocates, potential mothers on their side, saying "Yes, please, regulate this, for it is Wrong." And on a fairly wide scale.

What is the LGBTQ+ equivalent of "The call is coming from inside the house!"?
There doesn't have to be one. It's literally the same people. Do you think there were LGBTQ+ folks for the abortion ban? No, the female advocates against abortion are still on board here

Seems like malpractice to prevent teaching sex ed to middle schoolers.

We had our first bit in 4th grade. Repeat in 5th. Big unit on it in 6th grade that got into more specifics. 9th grade health class was the finishing touches/most in-depth.

Banning sex ed for kids 12-15 just makes them dumber to the realities and consequences of sex. It would basically drag PA students down to Alabama and Mississippi levels for sex ed.
Judging by the past few years, this seems to be their strategy to grow the GOP base. Dumb, poor, hateful.

5th grade we got the small introduction. 8th grade, we got the larger introduction plus watching a baby being born (which was enough for me), 9th grade, we got the sex talk.

Same, parents could opt their kids out but I don’t remember anyone not doing it.

I've always been there - but this past few years has basically killed any hope that I have in change/justice/etc. Nothing is coming, and bad people win more often than they lose.

It's beyond repair. And the only people that can fix it are the people who **** it up in the first place. But those same people built a system that enables them to personally gain by maintaining the status quo.

I'm fortunate to be minimally impacted, but others are much less so. Really all we can do is find opportunities as the fortunate ones to do what we can to bridge gaps for the less fortunate.

Weird for me to say as I'm a very solutions oriented person. I dont like just accepting defeat, but at the same time you have to control your controllables.

That's pretty much where I ended up. Realistically, most of this stuff impacts me zero. I also realize I'm a job loss away from falling into the muck, but I'll only control what I can.

Right... every single one of us here (and pretty much everyone across the country that is currently comfortable) are more likely to fall into ruins than to strike it big.

That all being said. Things I am tired of...inflation, gas prices, a general sense of angst by everyone, wherever.

Someone really should focus on doing all they can to fix this stuff. Or 2024, really has my vote in a toss-up, because I'm not about to be bamboozled again with inaction.

Nothing's gonna happen. Americans have it just good enough that we don't want to fight for change; we accept the choices were given and ultimately politicians have no incentive to try to actually improve things

At this point, I'll take even the lower common denominator stuff. Biden could promise to wipe $50 from whatever and I'd call it a win. But he's shown he really has zero desire to help.

Which is why in 2024, if Trump/DeSantis come at it hard and focus on the things directly in front of our faces, it's going to be hard to ignore.
