Were landlords eligible for any of that PPP stuff or whatever it was designed to keep businesses afloat...?
No, only eligible payroll expenses for that program (it was to help businesses to keep paying workers).

There was a massive rental assistance program (25 billion), but last I heard they just allocated the money without any logical means for administering it.

CARES Act was absolute dogshit (bipartisan dogshit)

Sort of the "who cares" side, but always wondered why NJ din't let you pump gas. Never knew Oregon was the same.

I remember as a kid in the 80s you could chose to pump or have a service person do it. Also remember that pretty much being gone when I got my license in 1994.
Yeah, most NJ citizens like it because they generally aren't the ones filling up on the Jersey turnpike. We drive through NJ a lot to go to my in-laws in NY, and I always plan ahead so that I never have to stop at any of those service areas. Total cluster fcks, all of them.

There was a funny story about rents on Last Week Tonight this blast Sunday. Included a clip of an attorney equating the tragedy of being a tenant evicted while undergoing chemo with the tragedy of being a landlord evicting someone who is one chemo because of the cost hey incur.

Here's hoping greitens and king both get hit by space debris today and we won't ever have to hear from them again

Wow
He also said that the police were there to respond within I think 3 minutes of the shooting.

I mean, again, that parkland school security guy was scapegoated that time, but here the whole police department just waited for the dude to get done massacring elementary school kids before intervening

If I'm a property owner who hasn't been paid in two years you're darn right the rent is going up. I've gotta recoup that money somehow.
I’m confused, have renters not needed to pay rent in the last two years?

I paid my rent but I also was able to maintain a paying job. Our landlord was good though and reached out early into the pandemic to make sure we were still good/didn't need any assistance from him.

I'd wager the rent forgiveness was meant to be on a case by case basis.

Good thread on why the federal gas tax holiday isn't a great idea: the refiners/oil co. will take most of the tax relief:

My understanding was that you were still supposed to pay rent, but if you couldn't, you couldn't get evicted, but still owed the money.

Then again, I could be way off. I also didn't know when that eviction hold was lifted either.

Yeah, it wasn't rent relief, you still owed the money, you just couldn't get evicted.

I am not sure what other recourse landlords would have for back rent (thinking of those situations where a tenant would stop paying rent and just to be evicted with thousands in back rent)

Hopefully my renewal (I don't want to move again right now) is somewhat reasonable...that said, I've been renting a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment on the top floor of my building on the UES for under $2k per month...so...eeeeeeeeee...

Yeah...somehow I was able to convince them to lower the rent for a longer lease...

I also offered to give them a lump sum upfront (assuming they needed cash) to reduce the overall annual rent, but they said that wasn't legal...cap circumvention or something...

But yeah, I think in 2019 this apartment was $3500 or so per month...I got them down to half that in 2021...

I just hopped on zillow and tried to look around for just a 2 br/1.5 ba apartment near me and there are 0 under $3k. Oh boy...

Hopefully your great grandchildren will inherit that lease.

We had a 2+1 a block from the beach in Redondo that was like $1300/no I wanna say. But the that was 15+ years ago.

I haven’t rented in awhile - being a fully functional adult and all - but aren’t there laws around how much rent can go up year to year?

I mean s**t even if you buy a house in NJ or CT or whatever I'd still do everything I could to maintain that apartment.

Yikes, I would brace for an increase. Hopefully there is something in place to cap them from ungodly increases.

From what little I've read there is no actual cap in most places on how much a landlord can raise your rent for a renewal. It seems to vary a bit state to state as far as how much notice has to be given for a higher % etc.

I've paid mine and my kids have as well. I think it was you couldn't evict people if they hadn't paid rent.

If they want to raise the rent more than 5%, they need to give us 60 days written notice. We're not in that zone yet. I forget when our lease ends, but I think it's late autumn...I'm going to be annoyed. Hopefully they don't raise it more than 50%...

I could see that. back a few months, the Governor of GA suspended the state gas tax. I want to say it's something like 30 cents per gallon. stations are not REQUIRED to pass that on to the consumer. most of the stations near my house dropped maybe 10 cents. that said, GA already has one of the lower per gallon prices. I paid $4.29 yesterday at Sam's Club.
