you know how a lot of pro-gun people will claim that mass shootings are more of a mental health issue than a gun issue? what strides have we taken towards improving the populace's mental health?

c2i mentioned a few pages ago that Australia solved its gun problem after the shooting in 1996.you know how a lot of pro-gun people will claim that mass shootings are more of a mental health issue than a gun issue? what strides have we taken towards improving the populace's mental health?
Weird that they still have a massacre problem, though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_m ... _Australia

*looks at massacres and number of deaths*
Not sure if serious

Seems to follow the military designation of 'casualty' in that it can be death or injury. The US threshold for a mass shooting in 4 deaths, for comparison.
The interesting thing to me about that list was the different ways people found to rack up kills. Arson, stabbings, gassing(!?!), shooting, etc.

That list includes a drive-by where 2 people were killed and 4 injured. That sounds like a calm weekend in Ft. Wayne.

lol how the hell does a stabbing with only one death and one non fatal injury count as a massacre?
Politics And Current Events
Not arguing the definition. But, by my quick count, 77 deaths in the last ten years per that list. Here's the mass shootings last year hereSeems to follow the military designation of 'casualty' in that it can be death or injury. The US threshold for a mass shooting in 4 deaths, for comparison.

That's a fun list too. 689 mass shootings with 702 deaths.

Count the number of people injured

I'd wager a solid 60% on that Australia list post-2000 are labeled familicide so I'm not sure how comparable that is to the US

I don't know. ulf referenced death events then linked to a page that showed 303 non-death events in a pool of 689 events. *shrug*
To MiMH's original question: Nothing; we're doing nothing for mental health.

also I feel like you're implying that that kind of stuff doesn't happen in the US. if there's one thing Americans know, it's how to kill other people

Welcome to modern discourse.... come into the discussion with a stance. Find data to support your stance, ignore all data that goes against your stance. Walk away with the exact same stance that you came into the discourse with.

700 deaths in 2021 was pretty much the important number there. 77 since 2011 in AustraliaI don't know. ulf referenced death events then linked to a page that showed 303 non-death events in a pool of 689 events. *shrug*

I guess my point was I'm not sure saying they have a massacre problem is really quite accurate

According to a Simpsons episode, in Australia, your neighbors live many miles away..so, it's harder to kill people there. Their kill numbers should be 15 to 20x'd to make it fair.

Agreed.I guess my point was I'm not sure saying they have a massacre problem is really quite accurate
But as mikey says it's a completely different society in terms proximity as well, so I don't think you can make a 1:1 correlation.
I look at the Australia list and wouldn't claim they have a massacre problem, but I also don't think you could expect their results here given the difference in societies.

also, the question I asked was loaded anyway. of course we haven't done **** about mental health
I was prompted to ask it because of a thread I came across in r/UnpopularOpinions that talked about therapists being relatively expensive, which I agree with. Without insurance I think my therapist is like $150 a session or something. ideally the government should subsidize that kind of stuff but of course this country has an issue with public healthcare
