Wouldnt surprise me if many religions were invented to keep the poor in line, somewhat content with their plight, and obedient to their rich masters. "Knowing" that if they keep their heads down and die hungry, they get paradise handed to them afterwards.

Completely monstrous doctrine designed to control the psyche of the uneducated laborer, so he will never realize inequality and spend his entire life in service to someone born into wealth, and doesnt care the slightest that your one and only lifetime is spent enriching someone elses.

Pops says that he's pretty much walked away from their Methodist church, as it had become "too Baptist", in part, due to the coming holy war in the UMC over gay marriage. In places like SC, the very conservative (and powerful) rural black churches are way against even accepting that it is the law and that is cascading over to the white churches.

Palace intrigue...

Yup...black churches tend to be WAY more conservative on social issues than predominantly white churches.

The Methodists are headed for an schism over the issue. They punted for 4 years that last time the conference (?) took it up.

The Methodists are also in a Global federation which includes the African Conference, which is unanimously against homosexual ordination.

So the libs of the UMC are in a SJW fight over which is more important, recognizing "minority voices", or the LGBT lobby.

Note that my father is most certainly not a lib or SJW and he wants the anti-gay people to just drop it and go on to something positive.

true. black evangelicals generally support prohibition - which would be really amazing if it wasn't so tragically stupid.

Gentle reminder for Evangelicals everywhere, the modern nation state of Israel has nothing to do with the Israel of the Holy Scriptures except they happen to share a similar geographical location. No biblical prophecy is tied into what happened in 1948 or today. In fact the only biblical prophecy that the modern nation state of Israel needs to be worried about is Psalm 2 and its corollaries.

And that says what, that they should be worried about?

Interesting research on evangelicals
More evidence of problems w/ the term "evangelical":
1) 24% of Americans self-identify as "evangelical."
2) Only 45% of them hold historical evangelical beliefs.
3) Only 69% of those who agree w/ those beliefs identify as "evangelicals."

What it is controlling your outcome? That sounds awfully like religion. Or is it a non-secular supernatural force, which has specific plans... for you?
"My" outcome isn't a thing. I'm just a collection of particles. The outcome of everything is just a math problem too complex for us to solve. It's not a special force. It's just x+y=z
Predestination doesnt exclude free will. Nothing is steering your desicions but you. its just a matter of seeing that because you made a choice, doesnt mean that was your only option.

We are 4 dimensional, and thus, can only live and exist in the present, where all of our choices are made. Sure, you were always going to make that choice, but it is predetermined by you making the choice, not because the choice was made for you, or because there is a formula to the actions you take.

I don't think time exists at all. It's conflated with sequence. Everything that will happen has already happened. We just aren't able to step aside and peek ahead or behind in line.

If there is no time, there can be no line. Everything that will happen, and everything that has already happened, is happening now.
