Yeah, it is moving through absolute bath water in the Gulf right now with no wind shear to speak of.

The Houston/Galveston area is verrrrrrrrrrrrrry lucky this is making landfall well east of there. The track has subtly been trending on the Louisiana side of the border over the last several model runs.

The worst storm surge is always on the top/right quadrant of the hurricane, which puts Southern Louisiana in a very bad spot. This would have been a nightmare if it had made landfall west of Houston or closer to NOLA. That said, there are still a lot of people that live in that area.

I always thought it was upper level cloud to cloud electrical activity.
Me too. It's storm lightning reflected off higher-level clouds.

Also interesting is that this weekend, Laura is actually expected to strengthen again once it moves out over the Atlantic, and could eventually make a second landfall in Nova Scotia/Newfoundland. They often get the nasty remnants of these tropical systems.

Laura did not weaken at all as it made landfall last night. I can only imagine the utter devastation we will see later today. Awful.

It’s great that it spilt the big population centers, but it’s still going to horrible.
