In front of the Otter tank? In the bird show auditorium? Out back on the inlet side? I have so many questions

I'll let you know. Hopefully I can sit on the big gator statue during the ceremony. *fingerscrossed*

The friend we're staying with for the trip works for the state; he designs nature trails. The one they put in west of the aquarium is pretty cool. The one they finished last year at Fort Macon is fantastic.

That's a great aquarium for its size.

We did a trail at Fort Macon back in 2016 - did they make that one larger? Or just improve it? It was really cool already.

They have always had one up near the fort on the inlet side. I'm not sure what stage it was in in 2016 but now it goes from the fort and goes through the marsh all the way up the the park entrance. Then you can cross over the and either turn right to go across a new bridge to Atlantic Beach, or turn left and go through the new trail that goes through the sand dunes and ultimately back to the inlet/fort parking lot. The beach side trail is very new, the marsh side one you might have seen.

It's depicted in yellow here, and is 3.2mi long:

The footbridge to Atlantic Beach is not depicted but now you can continuously walk from the east side of Atlantic Beach to the Fort without having to walk on the road, it's pretty neat.

Where does one get a degree to design nature trails? Because I may need to go back to school

He actually has a degree in textile engineering from NC State, it's bonkers really. When I met him in 2005 he was a park ranger at Fort Macon. Then he went on to help manage some wetland areas on the OBX. He parlayed that into a state job designing trail systems. He's a very cool guy to know if you like outdoor stuff. He also has a charter captains license and used to do duck charters; but I think now that he works out of Raleigh most of the time he can't run his guide business in a real way anymore.

Textile engineering? Were tobacco engineering classes full?

If I didn't have a family and have to start from the ground up in the salary chain, I'd consider being a park ranger.

There was a time when I was angling towards going to UNC-W for marine biology and then becoming a park ranger afterward. I hit the easy button and went to the military instead.

Yeah, we did the marsh trail. Need to check the rest of it out. Thanks for sharing the picture.

The videos from the Bahamas....my God. The Minister of Agriculture posted a video yesterday taken from the second floor of his home. Water was sloshing up against his windows and had gotten into the house. I cannot fathom the number of deaths that are going to come from this. There are going to be countless bodies that wash out to sea and are never seen again.

This is pretty horrific, especially when you consider there's a good chance these people didn't get out. Retreated to their attic and the waves are coming up under the eaves of the house.

sure local meteorologist, let's stop everything so you can already incorrectly predict the weather.

This is not a case of local Joe Schmo weather guy predicting whether or not it is going to rain next Sunday.

They're no different. Dorian itself was given the trajectory of it going almost directly into Florida for like a week prior to it shifting up the coast. They had ample time to discover, and assess the situation. I'd be curious how much they're losing if it really matters.

I would even argue, that enabling technology could help them better predict things on a faster scale, but potentially trying to find a new solution if they're using a minuscule reading to predict models.

That high pressure ridge to the northeast of Dorian is hanging in very strong. What does that mean? Rising threat in GA and SC...because of the geography that area is extremely prone to storm surge (like a giant funnel). Thinking landfall around Cape Lookout in NC.

Man...just zero margin of error for the SC/NC coast. Hilton Head is gonna take a beating.
