My folks are trying to fly out of Tampa Sunday morning. That should be a close one.

Heyyy...guess who's driving to Tampa on Friday to drop a friend's second car to his new house?

Ugh.

Just got the "Unplug your electronics, print out a list of class rosters with emails" email from the IT department (not working on Mission Critical tasks today lol).

We've had 4 tropical storms over the last two years, and campus has lost power up to a week for a couple of those storms. Not great.

haha. Friend.

You jest.

Actually, when I was going to buy that Porsche in Jersey I was going to see if you wanted to grab lunch. Raid your sack, whatever. Shame that didn't work out.

Was already scheduled to fly outta here Friday so I get to miss out on all the fun. But if it's anything like Irma was, my place won't lose power and there will just be tree shrapnel in the streets to clean up. Let's hope it's like Irma.

Lunch, huh? On an odd-numbered hangover day, I could definitely pull it off...

@shafnutz05

We are currently scheduled to fly out of Tampa at 8pm on Monday evening. My wife has an interview on Tuesday so we cannot come back later.

What is your best guess as of now? Should I try to rebook early Monday or later Sunday night?

I was waiting to see the Euro model, but haven't seen it.

Euro actually has it making landfall a little further south, almost down to West Palm Beach. The question is going to come down to when it makes that inevitable right-hand turn. Still too early to tell--I don't think Dorian will cross the entire state and reach the Gulf, TBH. It's either going to come into Central FL and turn north, or do a hard right and miraculously miss the coast like Matthew did.

I don't think hurricane force winds will make it anywhere near Tampa (aside from an occasional gust maybe), but it is very hard to predict how much lashing from wind and rain the outer bands will be dumping on the bay.

Finishing up some shopping today in PB County. the Publix store was insane. Not a crumb of bread or drop of water left in the place. There's a bit of panic starting, I think. Overall, beautiful day today, but getting word that we'll probably be closing tomorrow early at work. Kids still have to go to school. HAHA.

I do believe that a few days a year of hurricane worry in Florida is far more preferable than the 300+ butt days of snow/cold/humidity/gray skies of southwestern Pennsylvania. Good luck Gabe! I do miss Publix. Best grocery chain in the USofA.

The humidity is what will keep me out of Florida, climate-wise. There is no way at all to pretty that up. At least in the swamp in NC it was only unbearable for 3 months out of the year.

Ended up switching to a Sunday 5pm flight for my wife’s sanity...and ultimately mine, amirite fellas?

I would’ve waited it out, but this is a big interview for her and I don’t want to risk it.

Smart man.

And I agree with dodint. Days like today in Pennsylvania are why I love living here. When the heat clears out, the front comes through, and the dew point drops into the low 50s, there is no weather that feels better.

Latest Euro is a nightmare for the immediate Florida coast. Just sideswipes the coast for two days before making landfall north in Georgia. Also slows it down.

I moved there after six years in Colorado. Humidity from June-October is never off. No way around that. No,shoveling the humidity, worrying about clear roads, or bundling the kids to go anywhere though. Or paying state income tax. That said, I’m back in Colorado. They both beat the brakes off of Pittsburgh in terms of weather. Those perpetually gray skies are a nightmare.

I've lived in Florida for 16 years and I always tell people that if you can handle the steambath from May-early November, then the other 6 months are your reward. I've never minded heat and am not afraid of sweat so hitting the golf course in the middle of an August day is nothing for me. Just have to watch those pesky thunderstorms every summer day.

The focus is always on the wind with hurricanes, but the catastrophic rainfall cannot be overlooked.

This is just one model, but it shows you just how widespread and disastrous the flooding will be, compounded by the nonstop winds. This is starting to get a very Andrew-like feel.

Yeah, we had flooding 10+ days after our tropical storms last year. Water, you know, runs to the sea.

I drive over a small lake on my 7 minute commute to work. One morning, about a week after one of the storms last year, I went to work at 8 am and noticed the lake was high. One manhole cover was bubbling a bit, on the town side of the bridge. By 1PM, we were told to evacuate because the bridge would be underwater by 3. As I drove home at 1 or, half the bridge was already submerged. That end of town had extensive flood damage, out of nowhere.
