We left Pittsburgh at about 8 AM...I couldn't believe how bad a lot of the streets were coming out of town. Forbes was a mess. At the big curve where you can either go left to take 22 or go right to the turnpike in Monroeville, it was a sheet of ice. Two cars had already spun out and there was a cop there desperately trying to warn people to slow down.

In general the streets within the city limits are often the worst. Being as cold as it was today after all the precipitation didn't help either making everything ice again.

It takes forever for crews to get to surface roads within the city. I have no evidence to back this up, but I’m pretty sure my street is last on the priority list. I always have to put in a service request to get a plow to drive down.

Yup, every time it snows:
Holy **** pittsburgh. Put some ducking salt on Penn Ave
I'll never understand how downtown looks like a logging road through Siberia and then as soon as you get out the roads are dry. They should put plows on the buses and kill two birds with one stone.
I don't get it either. Roads in pretty good. Hey we're the city... everything is ****

My neighborhood road (off of Burchfield) is immaculate at all times. A councilman or something most live on my road. It gets a plow about every 2-3 hours during a snow. Meanwhile Rt. 8 is a sled dog trail.

The excuse was many plow and salt truck drivers called off over the weekend. I'm not buying it, because the city has always been horrible when it comes to snow removal.

That said - this morning when I caught my bus around 6:20am, the streets were plowed and salted. Smooth sailing all the way into town from Shadyside.

Do they dump plowed snow into the rivers? Or is that a no-no from an environmental standpoint (trash, salt, etc.)?

They use it to preserve the homeless until the spring thaw.

Parkways were completely cleared. Surface roads were still **** in my neighborhood. I love Tokyo drifting from my house to the parkway.

Apparently Peduto got wind that we're pissed.
"The City clearly needs to do a much better job addressing snow and ice on streets across Pittsburgh. Our workers did their best, working around the clock for days, but we need to give them and our residents the tools to provide better service and support in the future.

My administration will immediately take four actions to address this situation.

First, we will invest in more road salt and liquid calcium chloride, and study ways to improve the chemical composition of the ice-fighting materials that the Department of Public Works is placing on roadways. Most streets throughout the city were treated with salt and chemicals this past weekend but due to low temperatures and other factors the materials did not clear streets nearly well enough.

Second, we will work with our Department of Innovation and Performance to increase our public presence on nights and weekends and ensure that resident complaints are efficiently received, responded to, and routed to the appropriate City officials.

Third, my administration will meet with DPW partners to explore ways to get more drivers onto streets, particularly on weekends, nights and holidays similar to last weekend. Our employees performed at their best the last four days – working back to back 12-hour shifts responding to a nightmare scenario of rain, freezing rain, snow and ice – but we need to find new ways to send more of them onto the streets and provide Pittsburgh residents the services they deserve.

Finally, we will issue a request for proposals for a redesign of our snow removal routes to make sure they are being addressed in the smartest, most efficient and most productive manner.”

I'm sure more salt will move the half a foot of snow from Penn Ave.
