Now there's a wildfire inside the city limits of Los Angeles, about five or six miles from my old neighborhood.

Being reported on news radio that there are many fire hydrants that are totally without water or that have dried up their reserves. In addition, close to 400k people are left with no power in the valley as main power lines have been destroyed.
Winds expected to kick back up once the sun goes down. Two more nights of predicted Santa Ana winds.

Probably when it was still connected to Pangea.

It rained a couple weeks ago, only enough to ruin the car wash from the weekend. I think it was two years ago when they predicted El Nino, and it was dry. Last year they predicted La Nina, and we had record rainfall. This year, it looks like a rainstorm of ash...
How are the areas up there post fire and destruction?

Mrs Tif's district runs up there, and she was in Santa Rosa a week or so ago. It's pretty beat up. A lot of the displaced people might not be able to return to Sonoma; a little less than half the people knocked out of Santa Rosa were renters. And because of the pressure on the housing market (3,000 homes lost), rents are soaring. Many of the home were old, and not up to current code, so you're looking at costing perhaps twice as much of the previous structure's value to replace it. Many people are, by and large, thoroughly screwed. It rained a couple weeks ago, only enough to ruin the car wash from the weekend. That said, I'm hopeful we can get up there in the spring. They need the tourist dollars, badly.

Good lord...this drives home just how crazy this fire is. UCLA is practically a stone's throw from here. I'm hoping they are able to save the Getty Museum.

That said, the Getty was really designed and built to protect against disasters like a major fire. Even the landscaping is designed so that the plants with the highest water content are closest to the building. Further away, they is more brush. But we also maintain the brush, so that we don’t have combustible materials. The buildings themselves are made of travertine and metal panels.
Our air filtration system is very sophisticated: It basically reverses, so that air is pushed out rather than in and smoke is not able to get into the galleries to damage the collection in any way. So the best place for the collection is right here at the Getty [emphasis added].

The Getty is an outstanding facility. I've had and been to several birthday parties there in the past, great place. The doors to each building are practically an air lock, that ventilation thing is no joke. From out in the garden, on a clear day* you can see pretty much down to Orange County. Definitely one of the best spots in the city, and a must-go for visiting out-of-towners.
I saw on a fire map a bit ago that it looks like the Skirball Fire has jumped the 405 and now has a small footprint on the Encino side of the Pass. That hurts.

Steady snow flurries at the house. Probably won't accumulate but it's brightening up an otherwise mundane weather day.

It's like 5-10 miles from where I work in Carlsbad. The smoke is pretty crazy seeing, having never seen something like that before.

That's from a new fire in Fallbrook. (Camp Pendleton-adjacent)

Fascinating model watch going into the weekend. Snow area trending nicely towards this area... About 3" forecast now for the daytime Saturday, and models increasing. Love these coastal storms

I’m getting mixed signals. As a plow supervisor, I’m hoping for accumulation or icy roads requiring salt trucks.

Rome, GA had a couple of inches. Just north of Atlanta.
And Freddy, I've had snow or an ice storm at least once per winter since I've lived in this part of SC. You're further inland, so you and others in the CLT metroplex should see some before the season is through. More likely in January or February.

Always crazy to see snow along the Gulf Coast. I remember the historic winter storm in 2004, that dumped nearly half a foot of snow in Corpus Christi, and 1.5" in Brownsville (along the Mexican border on the Gulf coast).
Regarding this weekend's festivities...this is a great example of why model-watching and following the weather is so fun. 72 hours ago, this storm was written off, as the models were headed out to sea. Then, the trend slowly started coming back the other way, and for the last 48 hours the precip shield has moved further and further west. This is the 12Z NAM:
I-95 corridor and just east I think end up getting the most, although if that trend continues west, they might move closer to the mixing zone. Unlikely though.
