Our AC has been on for over a month. Bedrooms are upstairs, thermostat is on the first floor. AC set at 72 degrees MIGHT get our bedroom down to 76ish degrees during the summer. It’s miserable.

Yup. Sounds about right. Hence the window unit during the summer.

Have yinz tried closing some registers when the AC is running? We close half of the ones on the first floor to force more air upstairs to the bedroom.

I was told by an HVAC tech that closing registers doesn't really work, because air can't travel in two directions inside duct work. I guess it would depend on the layout of your ducts, but that sounded reasonable.

I don't think it would necessarily make the other rooms cooler, but it would save run time on the AC unit and money, right?

if he wanted a money saving solution that doesn't make rooms colder he can just get rid of his a/c :pop:

Look, he's receiving bad news, just trying to find him a silver lining.

I had this problem in WI. We ended up just putting a window AC on the warmer level.

We had one unit "heat" pump heading the main floor of the house and the FROG. We had them seal off the vents and close the duct work for the FROG, because it wasn't doing anything. I put a window unit in there for a while, but then ended up getting a split unit. Perfect solution, with timer/auto on/off functionality. It's great and more efficient than a window unit, but may not work in your situation.

I've thought about closing the registers, but I thought I read that this could backfire because the central air unit needs airflow to be more efficient, or something. We have the supply and return vents in most rooms but I don't really know how much they help by switching them every six months or so.

We have a portable ac upstairs. The central air doesn't kick enough cold air up there since it's essentially the roof of the house.

Absolutely beautiful morning this morning. Got out to take the dog for a walk around 5:00, temperature was about 47 degrees. Probably won't see another morning that nice and cool until late September.

It's shaping up to be the first rain free weekend since April in our area.

We had our housewarming scheduled for this weekend and then friends moved their daughter's second birthday, so we moved our party to next weekend. Imma be mad if it rains next weekend, cause this weekend looks perfect.

 Tornado outbreak in Northern PA yesterday evening.

https://twitter.com/ryanhanrahan/status ... 3700002816
Wow - tornado debris lofted in Bradford County, PA was up to at least 15,000ft. That could indicate a significant tornado (EF2 or greater).

Another tornado in Pennsylvania. Looks like this one touched down in Wilkes-Barre. Radar detecting lofted debris.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/cap ... 2aa0b96e50

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down Wednesday night in northeastern Pennsylvania, where a severe storm pounded Wilkes-Barre Township, ravaging businesses, flipping rental trucks, and downing trees and power lines.

Local media outlets described the scene in Wilkes-Barre as a “war zone,” saying restaurants and stores on Mundy Street, in the township’s business district, were “completely gutted,” with water raining down from the ceilings.

The Associated Press said there were no initial reports of injuries, but one meteorologist said Thursday that had the storm hit just hours earlier, when people were dining and shopping, the outcome could have been much worse.

Ben Reppert, a meteorologist for the weather communications department at Penn State University, said that it would have been particularly dangerous. It would have been “rain-wrapped” and traveling across the state’s hilly terrain in the dark, meaning it would have been “nearly impossible for people to see it if they were out and about.” He said it would have been a “blind attack.”

That last article is a mess.

Yeah, if it happened at a different time under different conditions it could have been devastating.

I guess the weather the next few days is to make up for the four inches of rain we had Sunday.

We have a friend the next borough over who got hit the worst. They moved in their split level house six years ago, then a year after we had a similar storm where the water caused $45,000 in damage (they had to pay out of pocket). Last year they got hit again and decided to permanently close off their garage and built a separate garage in their backyard. Paid $30,000 to build that and then Sunday happens and she had a river of water coming into her house that knocked out a basement wall and sewage pipe due to the force of the water. She happens to live in the lowest part of her subdivision. Their driveway slopes down but they have a catch basin right beside it but the borough only has 18 inch sewer pipes.

Now how much they owe is more than their house is worth.

Had a beautiful weekend in the Hudson Valley... Lows in the low to mid 50s in the morning. Heading home just in time for a sucky heat wave. Monday will be a good day to be working.
