Jesus... It is moving through southern Georgia still at Category 1 or 2 intensity. It is weakening, but the storm got so strong before it made landfall that the hurricane conditions are being felt far inland. The satellite is still impressive.

The eyewall of Hurricane #Michael is finally collapsing after remaining intact more than 100 miles inland! #Albany #GA is already reporting wind gusts to 67 mph even with the center still a 2-3 hours away. https://t.co/h4of03rROV

The devastation in Mexico Beach, FL is as bad or worse than hurricane Andrew.

the next time a major hurricane is going to hit the local authorities need to take pictures of Mexico Beach to the people who insist on staying. CNN has pictures claiming to be of a group of residents of a mobile home park in PCB that stayed and rode out the storm. that's got to be a special kind of stupid.

They don't call it the Redneck Riviera for nothing.

This storm was a worst-case scenario from a "stupid people" perspective. Most storms tend to weaken somewhat. This was a special case because:

a) It rapidly strengthened right before landfall
b) Once the eyewall formed, it did not have time to complete an eyewall replacement cycle, which typically results in a temporary weakening that lasts for a bit of time. The eyewall was absolutely perfect when it hit.

First person view of #HurricaneMichael and its southern eyewall as it made landfall. Turbulence was the worst the pilot had experienced and he flew through #Ivan, #Katrina, #Rita, and #Sandy.

WOW....this might be the best video I've ever seen of the conditions inside the eyewall/eye. The shot of the back edge of the eyewall approaching him towards the end of the video is terrifying.

What an idiot. You couldn't pay me enough money to risk my life like that.

You could see they were driving right into the wind in the first part of that video. I know that those vehicles are usually super-modded to be basically tanks on wheels, but still, all it would take is one strong piece of siding going through the windshield Final Destination style.

Another day home for us. That makes eight days of school so far...

Heavy wind, lots of rain, lights flickering...but we’re OK (for now). Lots of flooding and power outages nearby.

So? I love going to the Banff Mountain Film festival because it puts me on the edge of my seat when guys are tightrope walking across two mountain peaks with no safety harness. They are stupid people, but it's exciting. Kinda like how the NFL used to be when they were decapitating wide receivers and Joe Theismann'ing Joe Theismann.

a friend's bf is a storm chaser but he sticks to tornadoes in the midwest. I can't imagine thinking it's a good idea to get out in a (basically) cat 5 hurricane. I get that the guy's not driving around in a Honda Civic but still, all that sharp debris flying around and you're banking that the glass of your vehicle is going to hold and protect you. just crazy.

Absolutely beautiful, sunny morning. Quite a shock to the system when 12 hours ago you had dew points in the mid 70s.

Yes, finally. Get bent, summer. Looking forward to the Lemieux Run now that I'm confident it won't be 80F with 85% humidity.
