Is it me or does it seem like every storm now around W PA has a tornado watch with it. Did something change how they issue these recently?

PA has apparently already reached it's average number of tornadoes per year.

I'm just thankful i'm in a very hilly part of town.

I've noticed a lot more Tornado warnings that are for "severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado." When I was a kid, a watch meant be aware, a warning meant there's definitely a tornado - either radar indicated or actually spotted. Not sure when that changed.

Speaking of, two current Tornado warnings in PA for storms capable of producing a tornado.

By choosing two terms that start with "Wa" to mean slightly different but significant things the NWS has failed me. I have never been able to remember the difference between the two. Should have been a Tornada Watch and a Tornado Alert (or whatever).

I always thought Watch was could happen from the storms passing through and Warning was a tornado (or funnel cloud) has been spotted.

Warning can mean either one has been spotted or the radar indicates an extremely high probability that one has formed/is being formed (in the shape of a hook echo).

Watch is just that the conditions are ripe for the potential to form a tornado.

Hook echo on radar (taken from the storm that produced the highest winds ever recorded on the planet):

Yeah, I don't think every time they issue a warning that a tornado has been spotted.

Yeah a warning could mean a few things. Either a tornado has been spotted and reported to the NWS, a tornado has been radar indicated, or the radar indicated that the conditions on a particular cell are right for a tornado (hook, rotation, etc.)

WATCH essentially means a chance this condition will happen and usually covers a large geographical area for a lengthy time period.

WARNING means the said weather is already occurring or is likely to occur and to take proper protective measures. Warnings are usually issued for much smaller geographical areas and usually for shorter more definite time periods.

ADVISORIES are sort of in between a WATCH and WARNING. The expected weather condition has a pretty good chance of occurring, even a likely chance of occurring, but typically an advisory is used for less severe type of weather conditions. A Wind Advisory might be issued or a Freezing Rain Advisory issued instead of a High Wind Warning or an ice Storm Warning.

No. If a storm is showing the classic signs of spawning a tornado (typically rotation) it will be issued. The atmosphere today is extremely conducive to that.

Also, don't confuse a Tornado Watch with a Warning. Watches are issued when conditions are ripe, warnings are issued when radar actually indicates rotation with a thunderstorm.

Take a look at this cell moving southeast towards Reading that is tornado warned:
* At 422 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located over Tower City, moving southeast at 35 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado and hail up to two inches in diameter.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Tree damage will occur. Damage to roofs, windows, and
vehicles is likely. Flying debris will be dangerous to
those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be
damaged or destroyed.

* This dangerous storm will be near...
Pine Grove around 430 PM EDT.
Golf ball sized hail has already been recorded in Cambria County, putting holes in windshields. If you look at the radar in PA, there are a ton of "spinners" (individual supercells showing marked rotation). I haven't seen anything like it for a long time...nightmare for NWS guys and gals.

Our local weather guy just posted this 20 minutes ago. Should clear up any confusion.
For those locations under a tornado watch remember it means all the ingredients are in place. Go about your evening while keeping an eye on the weather and have a plan of action if a warning is issued.

That is one hell of a cluster of storms north of Pittsburgh. Nearly all of them have significant hail cores.
