We got about 5 inches yesterday and probably 2 overnight. It's snowing pretty hard right now. I worked from home today because I don't trust these southern drivers in this.

My friend in Gaffney - of Frank Underwood fame and not that far from Pastor Freddy - has two plows/sanding trucks. Both turned over in the ice/snow yesterday. Not good.
Down in Mount Pleasant (near Charleston), the town actually ordered plow trucks because they keep getting substantial snow and ice storms each winter. This is obviously near the coast, and I lived there from 1990-2007 and saw substantial snowfall maybe 1-2 times over that time period. It was really rare to see the area get cold enough long enough for snow to fall and stick because of the ocean etc. They've had a major ice/snow storm each of the last five winters. Unfortunately, the lead time for the trucks they ordered is over a year...so they'll get them in time for hurricane season.

This winter storm was as good as advertised. Richmond and Greensboro both got a foot plus of snow. It was Richmond's 12th largest going back to 1897, and for it to happen this early in December requires an insanely impressive amount of cold air being pulled that far south.
Very impressive storm. I cannot imagine the last time Richmond got that much snow while BWI, DCA, and Reagan Airport all got a fat zero.

My crazy neighbor was cutting his grass yesterday. Heard the buzz of a mower and looked out my window to confirm. His yard has no snow on it but mine has a coating of frozen snow and leaves. I mean, doing it last month wasn't good but had to wait to mid-December. WTF

In a similar situation, my neighbor has had her irrigation system running every morning the last few days despite three days of rain and flash flood warnings and temps right around freezing.

I'll admit to poking fun at my wife for buying "As Seen On Tv" stuff, but this prestone windshield de-icer stuff really works. Sure beats my method of using an old cassette tape.

Some parts of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan are already approaching 100 inches of snow...on December 12. That lake effect machine is cranking.

@mikey weren't you talking about wanting to live out there one day? Big hockey community on the UP...

That map annoys me by coloring the lakes the same color as normal maps color the land mass.

The polar vortex stuff happens when a phenomenon called sudden stratospheric warming occurs. There are varying degrees, but in a major warming event, which typically occurs every couple of years, the stratosphere can warm by up to 90 degrees F over a period of a couple of days.
When this happens, it disrupts the polar jet stream (which typically just flows westerly up in the very northern latitudes), and sends the polar air diving south into the mid-latitudes, causing major cold snaps for locations like ours. The vortex itself doesn't bring snow, unless you end up with a boundary with warmer air from the south setting up somewhere near us.

Some kind of goofy wave patterns happening here the last couple days. Ocean Beach (San Francisco) is running close to 20' swells, and some SoCal beaches are so high that they're closing down several piers.

The fires didn't work, so now Mother Nature is trying to wash California away.

Remember when you said you just didn't get Hamilton? This is also that.

So it's about to get really cold around here or nah?

I have been a weather geek for a long time, but I have never seen this site. This is awesome, thank you for sharing.
One cool thing I checked out was the wind speed map. It's wild to watch how much the winds pick up over the Great Lakes.

I like the wind speed map as well. The northern Pacific seems like a scary place.

Also, yet another rainstorm coming this way for Thursday and Friday. This flat out sucks. I would take 15 degree sunny days over this crap.

Oh yes. The winds blow like crazy off of the Pacific into the PNW, which is why their weather is always cooler in the summer and moderated in the winter. I have been on a Coast Guard cutter up in that area, and I can confirm that it is indeed a scary place.I like the wind speed map as well. The northern Pacific seems like a scary place.
