2017 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread

Postby Dickie Dunn » Fri Mar 10, 2017 10:00 am

I enjoyed this from Walter Football:
Steelers re-sign QB Landry Jones (2 years): F Grade

I haven't found any financial details on this contract yet, but I don't care. This deal could be for two years, three cents, and it wouldn't change anything. It's awful, and it fully deserves to be graded poorly.

I don't understand why the Steelers continue to insist that Landry Jones is a viable No. 2 quarterback. He's one of the worst backups in the NFL. He was 25th in my 2017 NFL Free Agent Quarterbacks, listed below Vince Young and Josh Freeman, both of whom are out of the league. Jones is so bad that the Steelers have become an automatic fade in the preseason; they're 3-14 in their past four Augusts!

This is an "F." I'm not even willing to figure out a Millen grade for this. It's just bad and embarrassing that Jones continues to be named a No. 2 quarterback, and the Steelers should be ashamed of themselves.

Landry must have compromising photos of Kevin Colbert.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, Jones will make $4.4 million over the next two years.

He gets a signing bonus of $600,000, along with base salaries of $1.9 million in 2017 and another $1.9 million in 2018.

It’s a very affordable contract for the Steelers, especially in light of the importance of the position. Chances are Jones will play at some point over the next two years, and $2.2 million per year is as cheap of a quarterback insurance policy as any team will find.
The bolded is exactly the problem.

I would guess none of the salary is guaranteed, so only the 600K would be dead money if they him before the start of the season, or 300K if they cut him after next season.

Its less a matter of salary as opposed to not meeting the standard of "competent second string QB"

Everyone talks about how bad he is, but 7 TD, 6 INT 86.3 RAT aren't THAT abysmal

It's better than trying to have Gradkowski be your backup quarterback.

I know we all had visions of Bruce being Charlie Batch 2.0, but didn't he get hurt within the first 10 plays of live games each year?

with regards to the timmons deal, its strange since it seems like all of the talking heads around here were saying timmons is coming back only if he stays here he wants to be a steeler. i was surprised to see he signed but then i saw he is only 30 and the previous statements didnt make any sense

Hightower is making a visit today/this week. Seems like he's only using it to drive up price of contract for other teams.

@TomSilverstein: CB Davon House has agreed to one-year deal with the #Packers, according to a source.

@MarkKaboly: He's in the lobby at the Steelers on the phone. Word travels fast.

He was clearly talking to the Packers earlier.
He makes it to the Steelers offices.
Packers pucker their dadholes, sign offer.
House does trollface, leaves Steelers.

It's rumored that Hightower is working the same game. ;)

The only thing I like about Hightower's case, is that he's negotiating with the stingy Pats. It may work in his favor, but if he's not going to sign with the Steelers I hope he drives up the price.
