In that rusted X beam picture what purpose do the cables play?

I'm no civil engineer, but my guess is that beam was in compression. So those tension cables would have done nothing.

I was curious if the Twitter caption was sarcasm or not.

Other than a new, lifelong fear of bridges, maybe.

I used to absolutely hate crossing the Greenfield Bridge back when it had that other bridge built underneath it to stop debris from falling on the parkway. It was terrifying every time.

Again, not a civil engineer but I do think those cables serve some purpose. They are not there as part of the original design, and look like a temporary stop gap for the rusted beam. But my engineering mind cannot comprehend why a tension cable would do anything useful other than keep the vertical support from lifting off the ground. Could be that's what is going on depending on how this bridge was designed.

My $.02 is that the recent cold temperatures and thawing of ice/snow broke the camel's back. Thermal expansion is a dodint to deal with.

Fern hollow is a pretty deep drop from that bridge. I've walked across that bridge more than a few times and been underneath it dozens if not hundreds of times. Truly a miracle that no one died. Seeing the pic of the pothole bus was a "haha" moment. This is no joke.

They ended up going full remote partly due to the bridge collapse.

I'm enjoying the partisanship on my news feed over it. The bridge has been a failure the last 3 presidents and 4 (?) governors lol.

@DigitalGypsy66 what gives with 95 in SC? The piece between 26 and Waterboro has to be the absolute worst stretch of interstate I’ve ever been on.

Yep, it's awful. I've raged about that very section for years. You should see it on a Saturday in the summer, with the beach traffic going to Hilton Head/Edisto Island/Tybee Island.

The issue is that 95 in Georgia is six lanes, then down to four throughout the state. Back to six lanes in NC. Too much traffic moving through there for four lanes, obviously. That's the same amount of lanes as it was when it opened in the 60s.

No joke, I've looked at flying into HHI from where I live, just to get out of that part of the drive.

Sounds like the stretch of I70 between the turnpike and Ohio line, albeit without beach traffic.

Oh man I can’t imagine how bad that would be. The south lanes were way worse than the northbound ones. I tend to keep a close eye on potholes in roads and sway left and right to avoid beefy ones. There were some that I had to exit my lane to miss. It at least made the drive a bit entertaining. All of GA on 95 looks exactly the same and some highway hypnosis started to set in at times.

Yeah, I forgot about the road condition, I was just talking about traffic obviously.

I think it’s supposed to be widened and resurfaced…by 2040. Ugh.

Celebrating the sink hole and now this image with memes and Christmas ornaments really grinds my gears. I don't understand how Pittsburghers don't find both events embarrassing.
