I don't even know that I'd use one of those managed outlets designed for aquarium heaters. I've seen far too many posts online about fires. If you do decide you want to jump into the Apex world, you can probably save a few bucks by buying a used unit on eBay. The older models like mine are no longer made, so I'd probably still with the newer units - which have wifi built in.

Maintaining an aquarium is one of those things that I'm glad I never got into, like surfing or golf, because I can see it becoming an obsession.

I will say that even though I loved my saltwater tank at its peak, I don't know that I could do it again. Even with all of the automation, it can still be a chore. And it's similar to owning a cat for me, having fish that were 5+ years old and then dying. That Foxface in the screenshot above is older than my daughter (who is 9).

Every time this comes up I think about doing a nano salt tank.

Even more difficult... though you can do some really awesome stuff with them. I'd love to have a nano tank that is like 90% coral, with a single fish and shrimp in it.

I think the lighting situation with coral might be annoying. A cube is basically meant to be a glorified decoration. Having high output lighting on it 14 hours a day takes away from that, IMO. Fish Only w/Live Rock is my jam.

That's honestly be a first for me, seeing a FOWLR nano. I'd always game to see it, though.

This is kinda what I was thinking:

But even a coral only tank would be awesome (ignore the Clownfish):

When I had my salt tank I had some fantastic live rock that I got from a friend who was a very established aquarium keeper. While it wasn't coral it had a lot of color and I really liked having it in the tank. I'm pretty surprised I don't have any pictures of that tank, but that was back when I was still taking photos on film.

I'm not against reefs but they really amp up the workload.

It’s cyclical. When I set my 75 up, I went real hard. It is so incredibly balanced that I don’t need to do anything to it. I change water once a month because I feel like I have to do something. Prior to today’s unfortunate incident, I haven’t had a death in almost 18 months. It’s a perfect little balanced ecosystem that I get to enjoy and don’t have to spend much on anymore.

How it started:

At its peak:

I had everything from green to orange to red to purple coralline algae on my live rock, and love it. And to think all it took was shaving off some coralline algae from random snails I'd buy. All of the rock that I bought was clean rock from BRS; zero live rock from the start.

Here's a closer image of the coralline, along with some of my favorite zoas:

I've been wanting to start an aquarium, but it seems like it's a lot of work.

I wonder if I can get it to look like this:

Yeah, that's not too tough. I had a freshwater puffer tank like that.

That sailfin pleco will also outgrow the tank within a year. Not at all suitable for that size tank.

There are plenty of awesome dwarf plecos to choose from.

I’m a big schooling fish guy so I’d go with a group of otos instead of a dwarf pleco. I also like sword plants and the pleco will murder them

I'll take "Things only fish keepers and prison wardens can say with a straight face", for $400.

Sort of like, if you've ever said, "Damn it, who crapped on the floor?" you either have pets or children.

I wish I could say my son never crapped on the floor, but he's had some monster dooks that leaked out.

My dog is a shadow, she gets up every time I go anywhere. If I leave my desk to take a piss, she's in on it. I'm convinced she's just after treats and doesn't want to miss an opportunity. She also sleeps about 20 hours a day. To reconcile these two behaviors she'll either sleep behind my chair so I have to roll into her to get up. Or she'll get under my desk and fall asleep with a part of her body resting on my foot so she can tell when I leave.

She has a weird attitude of being super needy but also not very affectionate. It's really interesting.
