Stupid dog tried to eat a bee today. Heard her growl, turned around and she was just looking at me stunned. Dead bee on the couch. She won’t do that again.

Nah, that one probably will.

On the bright side, we took him in to get looked at because he was scooting his but so much. They expressed his anal glands (how the found the first mass) and since then, he’s been as happy as can be. He could have 3 months, he could have 3 years. Who knows.

Either way, we’ll enjoy our time with him.

Our senior lady Ava is still having a good time. We are coming up on two years with her next week. We anticipated caring for her for 6 months to a year but she is doing really well under our care. The only chronic issue is arthritic knees, but we have her on a daily pain pill that seems to keep it under control for now.

Dasaquin
Carprofen
Proviable
Dasuquin Advanced w/Egg Shell Membrane. The Egg Shell is new, we're on our first bag of it. She has been on regular DA for the last two years.
Carprofen 100mg, administered half in the morning half in the evening for generalized pain.
Gabapentin 300mg as needed, she takes it for acute pain maybe once a week.

I'm really happy with the Carprofen. We actually had a discussion with the vet about how to tell if she's ready to be put down, because she was having a really hard time with mobility, and then the Carprofen cleared that up and she's back on her feet. We were surprised.

My vet says there is supposed to be some new wonder drug hitting the market in November. I don't recall the name but I'll let you know when I check in with her.

My daughter's cat is on atenolol twice daily for his heart disease. So far, he's been good about taking it in a pill pocket, though he stopped liking the chicken flavor a few days ago and refused it in the morning. Had to run to PetSmart to get salmon flavor to get him back on track. Lifetime meds are no fun with pets.

Our old girl is on Cosequin and Carprofen every day. We just celebrated her 12th birthday, she's still in pretty good health but I've definitely noticed a slowdown over the last six months, although to be expected.

We still go for about a mile walk most days.

I think I posted about this before, but I can't understand why Science Diet dog food keeps going out of stock. I get the 25 pound bags of the weight control formula for one of my dogs, and almost every time I try to order it's either completely out of stock on Amazon or only available from third party sellers who want $150. I bought today from Chewy, $85. Two years ago it was a shade under $50 because I always had to add on a bag of treats to go over $50 and get free shipping. Thanks, Biden.

We use Taste of the Wild which is not available at PetSmart. But, the cat gets diabetic food that locally is only available at PetSmart.

Taste of the Wild is cheapest at Rural King, but we almost always have a Pet Supplies Plus coupon that gets it closer, and they'll bring it out and load it for you so you're not dragging the 40 lb bag around the store, so that's what I usually do. I kind of feel bad when it's an elderly man or a young high school girl who weighs about 80 lbs bringing it out but hey, that's their job.

We use Purina Pro Plan DM that we order from Chewy.com. Just upload your pet and vet info into your account, and the vet gets an email to verify the Rx. Once they approve, the product ships. (Our vet has always approved within a few hours, so there's no real delay) Chewy doesn't need to contact the vet if you've got refills left on the Rx.

(I just re-ordered this food Tuesday, actually)

We just found Science Diet canned stew for the first time in a while. The clerk at the pet store said there are shortages.

We're having our solar panels installed today, and since they'll be in and out of the house, we have 3 of our 4 cats locked in our master bedroom, where I work. Two of them have been absolutely howling since being locked in, and they're driving me mad.

For the dog owners:
Thunder, who died on Nov. 6, is one of hundreds of dogs across at least five U.S. states — Colorado, Rhode Island, Oregon, New Hampshire and Massachusetts — thought to have contracted a mysterious respiratory illness that experts are scrambling to understand.

Very little is known about the illness, but veterinarians say it usually starts with a cough that might last for weeks, then progresses to pneumonia (visible on X-rays) and severe respiratory distress. The disease generally does not appear to respond to antibiotics, and in acute cases of pneumonia, poor outcomes are seen in as little as 24 to 36 hours, according to the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association, which has received more than 200 reports of potential cases.

“We don’t know what’s causing it, and we can’t say definitively how it’s being transmitted,” said Lindsey Ganzer, a veterinarian who owns the North Springs Veterinary Referral Center in Colorado. “We just don’t know enough right now.”

Ganzer’s hospital has seen at least 35 cases since about Oct. 20, four of which were fatal “due to severe pneumonia,” she said. None of the dogs appears to be fully recovered yet, and her treatment plan so far includes testing to rule out common viruses and infections, supplementary oxygen and a cocktail of antibiotics — which may help with secondary infections, though she’s not convinced it addresses the root cause.

A Pennsylvania lawmaker has proposed a bill that will make declawing a cat illegal.

State Senator Carolyn T. Comitta (D-Chester) proposed the bill to prohibit the declawing of cats, with an exception being if the procedure is medically necessary for a therapeutic purpose and performed by a licensed veterinarian.

Declawing is a procedure that amputates most or all of the last bone in each of a cat’s toes. The procedure is usually performed to stop unwanted scratching. Many animal advocates, vets, and others have acknowledged that the procedure is inhumane and traumatic to the animal.

Declawing a cat can cause many ailments, including chronic pain, infection, lameness, back pain, and other issues.
