Roscoe turned 1 yesterday, and got a free cup of dog-safe peanut butter frozen yogurt after enduring the torturous 5 minute car ride.

When we first brought Lily home, she had patellar luxation on both knees. We knew surgical correction was necessary, and we did do both knees the first two years she was with us. The second one was performed by one of the vets who invented the surgical repair procedure, and he could not have been more wonderful. He personally called post-op to give her prognosis, and proactively followed up a couple times during her recovery.

The guy who did her first knee, the left, not so much.

He did not call after surgery, and by the time we got her in the afternoon he was on an international flight to Korea where he would be for six weeks. He did not contact us upon his return, and we sought a new vet during her recovery.

Flash forward six years to today: For about a month, Lily has been favoring her left hind leg........ and I think you can guess where this is going. She's had varying degrees of limping associated, with her knee visibly 'clicking' as she transfers weight through it, and occasionally she'll tuck her paw and three-leg it. We took her to the vet yesterday, and she had several ideas for what it might be. X-rays revealed the answer was none of them: The surgical repair has completely failed. Her patellar tendon is fully out of the trochlear groove and is now more or less just a fancy strap between her femur and tibia. When the vet was talking about it, she was quite animated and not at all happy about the vet care on display. And Lily's no longer a good candidate for surgery, so however long she has left with us she will basically be a 3.5-legged dog.

There are worse problems to have as a pet owner. But it's rare when your pet's chronic grief is vet-induced.

My 90 lb doberman who thinks she's a lap dog has been sleeping on me for about 2 hours now. Which is fine. But she has the worst gas tonight. Woof

Our sweet goldendoodle Molly turned 8 this week. She has surgery next Friday to remove a couple of cysts/lumps that the vet thought looked a little dodgy under the microscope. First time we've needed to use her pet insurance in seven years

We celebrated her 8th birthday with a trip to the dog park and a big cheeseburger when she got home.

Thanks man---yeah noticed she was getting a couple of those lumps (common older dog stuff) so happy we caught it early.

She may be eight years old but she acts like a puppy at the dog park. Just runs nonstop, in and out of the water 100 times, etc.

I've got one miserable girl at home. She had to go for a lumpectomy yesterday at the vet. They removed six lumps of varying sizes/types, and sent two in for a biopsy. It's a painful amount of TLC...sutures don't come out for 10-14 days, she has a bandage from her upper leg down to her paw that cannot get wet. The "can't get wet" deal is by far the most difficult part of this, she really loves wearing a plastic bag around her foot and leg when she goes to the bathroom

She looks pretty rough for Halloween this year...I guess the timing is good.

I think because she had lumps removed, the underlying skin that is sutured together is under even more tension than usual, so it will take longer to heal.

I finally realized she just needs to get used to it, although I do take it off briefly for bathroom trips and eating, when I am watching her intently.

I think the time has come to shut down my saltwater tank. I lost the passion for it after two of my favorite fish died unexpectedly, and the only reason it's still online is because my Foxface is still around. I'm trying to see if the coral shop I go to will re-home him, along with the rest of my cleanup crew and coral. My wife's going to be a little pissed with me for not sticking with it, but I think this is for the best.

We lost one of the cats last night. Lillian was 15 and we gave her four happy years after adopting her and Audrey at 11 years old. She was one of the rare cats that enjoyed belly rubs and would lay on her back, paws up, all the time before she got sick.
