I gave up when they took him to the vet and he knew it was time. Nonetheless, that still pretty much ruined my life.

It's so close to home. The stairs, the sleeping, it's all happening.

Same with the hardships. Got my dog in 2007, when I got out of boot camp and MOS school. She has been there for my wife and I's separation, three deployments, wifes cancer, death of wifes parents, moving around the country. Smiling the whole time. Best $10 we ever spent.

We want to get her to the ocean one more time, I will be very upset if we don't manage that.

Yeah, my big dog is 12 now. I have to lift him into the Jeep and onto the bed. He's been with me from Georgia to Maine (twice) and around 200K miles in between. I don't know how I'm going to handle losing him.

Ugh....sorry :(

I had a golden retriever when I was really young, and while I was probably 8 or 9 when he died, I was so young that I didn't fully "connect" with him, so it didn't hit as hard. I had a golden I was much closer with through my teenage years, but I was away for his older years, and while that one really hurt, I was OK. Molly, our goldendoodle now, is the first dog that is truly mine (or ours), and I am fully responsible for her care. She's only 6 now, but the bond I have with her is more than any other pet in my life.

My cat is only four and she's the first pet that is all mine. She's only an indoor cat so she should live another 10+ years but knowing one day I'll have to take her to the vet to say goodbye sucks.

Since we are all sharing our sad stories I will share mine as well.

I am on shelter pet #2. The first dog was the beardog, and no one really knew how old she was but I figure she was 2 or 3 when I adopted her. whoever owned her before I adopted her from rural ohio must have been a grade A jagoff. she spent most of her time supposedly tied to a tree and was most likely neglected. the lady that ran the dog pound said they had to get surgery to fix a cut on her stomach when they went and got her. the dog pound lady's exact words were "her guts were hanging out" but I never got a full explanation of what that really meant. anyways, bear was a social retard and was never able to warm up to people outside of her trust tree and most certainly never learned how to interact with dogs. she hated thunderstorms and would hide in the bathtub, and i always blamed the old owner for that. she didn't like to be petted for more than a few minutes at most. she never cuddled unless it was after a 2 hour walk. i put a lot of blame on myself for never working harder to help her learn that dogs aren't out to get her, but for the most part i blame the pieces of sht that had her when she was a puppy. she was gentle, sweet, loyal, and smart. i like to think i gave her the life she deserved, but i'll always be bitter towards the prior owner.

The second dog is the dog i own now, and her name is chloe. for whatever reason, she was shipped from Catawba county NC to western PA by the Catawba county animal rescue. she was sent up here with her puppies. she also had heartworm. so I'm guessing her owners gave her up for one of those two reasons. either way, it is a weird case because chloe is the total opposite of bear. she loves people of all kinds and is awesome with kids. I'm guessing she grew up in a very good home with someone who had a big ass truck because she likes to sit under big ass trucks when she sees them. she doesn't lick or kiss people and she stays out of rooms unless she is invited. i don't know why chloe had to leave her old family, but she did. I'd like to think they miss her, and if i ever had a chance to meet them i would tell them that they did an excellent job raising such a precious dog.

i hate this thread

My in-laws have a 16 year old chocolate lab. This dog might live forever.

After walking 12 miles to get back to the place he thought was home, Toby the cat's original family took him to a county shelter and requested that he be euthanized.

Luckily for the 7-year-old Maine coon mix, the shelter, not wanting to euthanize a seemingly healthy cat, contacted the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, North Carolina, for help. "The shelter called us at the SPCA to ask if we could take him in and help him find a new family," the nonprofit wrote on Facebook. "Of course we said YES!"
The first family should be euthanized.

We brought our cat to our new place finally. Have been back and forth between our new and old house the past week and just putting off bringing him. Finally Friday he was basically clinging to my wife's leg, so we got him today. Now he hasn't even come out from behind the basement steps. Poor guy is taking a while to adjust

The last week of escrow on our first house is when we lost our first critter, Sybil. On moving day, her surviving sister, Callie, basically hid in the bedroom closet. She was a very aloof cat, and really wasn't very social. But in the five days following Sybbie's departure, yo could tell Callie was affected.

Some friends came over to the new place and brought pizzas and stuff, and when they left I said, "Let's go get Callie." Mrs Tif was like "no, I'm tired, I don't wanna drive back to the apartment." I sorta lost my cool and said "If you don't want to come along, fine, but I'm going to get the cat now." She decided to come along, and when we opened the apartment door, Callie was sitting in the middle of the living room, saw us and meowed and ran to us, purring. At this stage, I had known Callie around six years..... this was the first time I heard her purr.

She lived another year and a half, and became the most amazingly affectionate little critter.

Carlin has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. With intense chemo, we can expect 10-14 months. Without treatment, she has 30-50 days.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cry myself into oblivion and wait for Mrs Tif to get home so I can break the news to her.
