The rifle I'm looking at is $1,299 already, not thrilled with the idea of tacking another $900 on it. With a mid-line scope like a Nikon I can keep it in the $1,500 ballpark instead of $2200.

Yea, that's what I have. Holds zero really well - no issues, always works. Red dots are no frills though, and imo it comes to how close you want it to the receiver.

What's the rifle?

IMO, a lot of people spend a lot of money on a scope, but still can't hit worth a damn. Most mid-range scopes do the job and don't come anywhere near $1500.

That being said, if you're dead-set on good glass, still can't argue with that..

The $1500 mentioned above was for the $1300 rifle and a $200 scope. The Nikons I'm looking at are tickling $200. The $2200 was for the rifle and the Trijicon which is a tough pill to swallow.

The rifle is a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rem Mag. I've wanted one for YEARS and this year I'm taking the plunge. Originally it was going to be in 300 Win Mag but the 7mm and 300 both have the same flat trajectory so I'm opting for the lighter round. I'll be able to hunt whitetail with it but also take it out to a 500 yard range and have fun.

Only real criticism I've heard is that the 7mm round is hard on barrels and I may only get 1,500 rounds through it. Have to do a little more research there.

I like iron sights. Nice thing about a scope is it works as a spotting scope as well, though. I qualified expert on both in the USMC for whatever that's worth.

I've seen advice in magazines that, at least for hunting, the scope should cost as much as the rifle. Now, magazine writers want their advertisers to sell scopes, so I take that advice with a big grain of salt. But I think if we are talking about the potential for 500-yard shots, some really nice glass is called for, especially on a $1,300 rifle. In the same place I'd probably spend at least half the rifle's price on a scope, although that's easy for me to say when it's not my money. Something along the lines of a Leupold VX-3i.

Unfortunately, the SCOTUS today denied certiorari in all pending 2A appeals, including appeals that asked the Court to weigh in on assault-weapons bans, shall-issue CCW permits, and other similar topics, several of which are subject to active circuit splits. It's getting pretty clear that CJ Roberts is behind the Court not taking these cases.

All good points. I'm hunting for the first time this year. I may go with the ~$200 scope this fall while I get used to the rifle and carry it in the woods for the first season, then treat myself to a Sig or Trijicon or whatever in the spring of next year. Not sure, still thinking things over. If we get full offer for the house I might just treat myself to the whole thing up front. Or if the second wave knocks out the rest of my racing season.

Oh I thought you we’re spending 1500 on a scope and 1500 on a gun.

You’re gonna find good scopes in the $200-$600 range and I’d go SWFA or the Nikon isn’t bad.

Depending on where (or I guess how) and when you plan on hunting, you may not want to go overboard. If you're doing a lot of walking in brush or sitting in rain, the scopes gonna get banged up. That said I shoot a 308 with a Bushnell trophy hunter. Love it

I killed three deer last year with a Remington 783 .30-06 with the cheap scope that came with it.

Yeah, if I planned on brush hunting I wouldn't buy a 26" barrel, for starters. :thumb:

That's why I think I'm going to wait a year to buy the big scope. I am the guy that will drop his rifle while climbing in or out of a deer stand.

This is surprising and frustrating, as the microstamping/'good gun list' was one of the challenges.

The FFL whom I picked it up from offered me $1100 on the spot. I just can't pass this up. I have wanted a spartan since the first edition came out back in the early 10s. He told me the first edition is worth more now. So I hope this appreciates as well.

Which made me realize I could never be an FFL, Because I'd want to keep every gun I ever had

The only thing with that is that he's offering you probably $800 less than he'd get for it.

I've heard that they are pretty rare. Either way I have only ever sold 1 gun in my life and it was a single shot 12 gauge. I don't sell guns.
