Found a little oil on the garage floor under my wife’s CR-V. Looks like it’s actually brake fluid, and may be coming from the ABS system. Brake lines/ABS is something I won’t mess around with, so it looks like it’s going to the shop next week.
Welp, it’s the ABS control module. $2600 brand new, or $400 used. Yeah, let’s go with used on that one. Was hoping that it was just a single brake line, but I guess it could have been worse.

It absolutely could have:

Honestly, if they had said it would be $3k to fix, I’d have still done it. Beats spending $35k+ on a new car that will be driven 400 miles/year.

Our local dealership actually had a 2022 LX on the lot. Paid just under $30K for it, but without the dumb addons. Glad that's over with.

Now we get to add it and DG66 Jr. to our insurance. <faints>

Adding the third car and the new driver more than doubled our car insurance premium. No bueno.

I got a job to pay the difference when I was added to my parents policy 35+ years ago...

Yeah, that's on tap for him in the next few weeks.

He won't be able to pay full freight, but should be able to help out some.

How much alone to add him? $300/month?

Youngest is 14. Hoping we get the oldest out on his own insurance policy before she can drive but given previous discussion with Mrs. Franchise about "can't we keep <oldest> on till he's on his feet?" I'm not confident of that happening.

We are at $1648/6 mo for four of us (Two 50 year olds, a 21 year old and an 18 year old) for four vehicles (2021 Mazda3, 2018 Flex, 2016 Fusion, 2009 Legacy, no collision on the Legacy).

We went from $983 to $2100 for six months. Three drivers, three cars (2020 Pilot, 2017 and 2022 Accords) through USAA.

No tickets or accidents for us. Just lots of uninsured drivers down here. Some friends of ours played dumb and didn't add their teen... Until he got into a minor accident. Then they had to pay back premiums to his sixteenth birthday.

Wow, that's a chunk.

On what planet would it make sense though not to insure your teenager? Seeing as how they tend to do stupid stuff and are inexperienced drivers. I think they are lucky they were allowed to pay back premiums and didn't have to pay everything out of pocket. If it was more major with property damage and injury I wonder if it would have been treated differently.

Yeah, that's pretty dumb on their part. The kid is very responsible, so they felt they could get away with it for a while.

r/JustRolledIntoTheShop has some insane examples of the market right now. A Cici’s with a $25k markup sold for $70k, a base Tacoma with a 100% markup sold for $92k (over $1k/mo for 83 months!!). Insanity.

If people are stupid enough to pay those markups that's their choice I guess. I get needing a car but that's crazy.

Autocorrect for Civic, apparently. $70k for a Cici’s pizza is a bit rich, unless we’re talking about the vanilla custard pie.

My wife and I both bought new cars in the two years prior to COVID... between that and buying our home in 2013, we've been immensely fortunate with timing.

Can you imagine the percentage of rural America that would have been conceived in the back of a Firebird wagon if Pontiac had made that car?

So it looks like this car showed up in an episode.
Though the reasons why are unclear, the gold Type K was reportedly destroyed by GM. The silver car, fitted with a 1979 Trans Am-style front end, appeared in a March 1979 two-part episode of The Rockford Files ("Never Send a Boy King to do a Man's Job"), driven by Odette Lepandieu (played by Trish Noble). With this much exposure and positive press, the Type K almost seemed destined for production.

and six years later, they attempted another version.

Before both of those, it looks like they attempted a similar version with gullwing windows

It looks like the exponential upgrade cost was the reason why this car was never officially released.
