In the past, I was one of those people who would trade in every two or three years just to have something new. But as I'm rolling up into year three, there's really nothing out there that amazes me to the point of "oooh, that would be nice to have."

Plus my car has an extended warranty with a very small deductible, so I'm content with it and theoretically could run with it for another three years.

Cars are like cell phones. They've all merged to a singularity without much meaningful innovation.

In the case of BMW they got uglier and they're now charging you a subscription for stuff like heated seats. I'm okay with my current fleet, thanks.

I'd seriously consider a Type-S if the price was reasonable. But it's not, so I'll roll with what I've got.

What Happened When I Mistakenly Filled a Diesel Cadillac Escalade With Gasoline

Fairly confident there are speakers in the fuel door that audibly say "diesel fuel only" when you open it on these vehicles.

@dodint : You’ll appreciate the conclusion of my seat swap saga. Get the seat today, and assemble it. Remove the old seat, then swap in the new one. Seatbelt removal/install is a dodint thanks to the lack of clearance. Plug everything in and test, and I get an airbag code. Can’t clear it, and after some googling, it turns out that Honda has to configure the weight sensor on the new seat to my ECU. So, about a $150 job. Whatever. I go to bolt in the new seat, and the rails are 1/4” narrower than mine, both front and back. So I can’t bolt them to the car.

Swapped my original seat back into the car and all I can do is laugh.

There is, but it’s a huge pain in the ass, and I’ve read that trying to do so with old/hard leather - which this very much is - is risky. I actually think it would tear if I tried.

Could you disassemble the old rails from the old seat and transfer them to the used seat?

Also, you may have been able to get away with no airbag code if you disconnected the battery before removing the old seat. I removed the entire upholstery in my Volvo when I had water get underneath, and found out later that I could have saved $50 if I had disconnected the battery first. I was pissed because it literally took 1 minute for them to reset the code, but could only be done at a dealership and it was a $50 minimum charge.

I don't think so, and it's a massive chore to take apart the rails. And yes, I had the battery disconnected while doing all of this work, thinking that I'd avoid the codes. My ECU was calibrated against the specific sensors in the seat, so once the expected value changes, I'm left with only one option - reprogramming.

Maybe I'll use this as an excuse to buy a used Type-S in a few years.

People who do that are 100% doing it on purpose. I think it's smart of you, but I also see people who do this but also take up two spots. Saw an F-150 at the mall do this to a Porsche at the mall a week or so ago that was across two spots. Got a good laugh out of it.

On a related note, the Ford Lightning is being assembled at the River Rouge plant in Detroit. One of the oldest Ford factories, that also built Model As early on. It had been largely closed until the last few years.

I saw a local dealer post a Bronco Raptor for $119,000. Is that really what those sell for? Who is buying them?

From a few weeks ago, it sounds like high car prices are here well into 2023:
Automakers are already beginning to alter production plans for 2023 because of the microchip shortage as the industry braces for millions more lost vehicles next year.

Stellantis, for example, has begun to taper back planned production of the Jeep Cherokee in 2023 because of the semiconductor shortage, said Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions.

A spokesman for Stellantis declined to comment on future production plans.

The automotive industry can expect to lose between 2 million and 3 million units of planned production in 2023, on top of the 10.5 million lost in 2021 and the 3.6 million lost so far this year, Fiorani said.

"Slowly, more chips are being filtered into the auto industry," he said. "But when we see production of high-margin vehicles still being affected, we know that the answers still aren't here — and we're still seeing that.

I've had a productive weekend. Swapped that stupid Cherry Bomb out of the Trailblazer and put that whisper-quiet RockAuto exhaust on yesterday. Super happy with how that turned out.

Today I tackled a job I've been putting off for a year, throttle body actuator replacement (both banks) on the M6 V10. I've never done any serious work on this car beyond an oil change and brake work.

I'll never not be impressed by 10 individual throttle bodies:

Wrist deep in the V, those actuators were way down there:

BMW cheaped out and put plastic gears inside these actuators. The speed and timing of opening the butterfly valves in the ITBs is monitored and controlled down to the millisecond. When the gears lose teeth they unilaterally hiccup and the car shuts down into limp mode to protect itself. All that is fixed now and I can resume revving it up to its 8,200rpm redline.

Nice work dodint.

That sort of information confirms BMW cars shouldn't be owned outside of warranty.
