Hit a doe on the way home in a freaking near white-out. I was only going about 25, she jumped right in front of me.

It's not leaking coolant but I took out the grille & lower left 'fang' and the left headlamp is loose - probably a broken mount panel. Couldn't tell on quick inspection if the bumper cover is fubar or not, but the foam absorber will definitely need replaced. Caught the top edge of the A/C condenser - but I sure as hell didn't turn on the air to test for a leak.

Doesn't look that bad, but I just got the estimate. Replace bumper cover, absorber and reinforcement, grille, lower left grille, left headlamp, radiator and condenser. Repair left fender and hood. $6800+. Glad our comprehensive has a $100 deductible...

No aftermarket available so it'll be all new GM parts. Sucks that I'll be without my winter tires for a week, but maybe I'll get lucky and we'll have an early January thaw. I'll finally get rid of that damn front license plate bracket - and the bumper scuffs and a few bumper/hood paint chips for $100. Thanks deer.

That’s a crazy amount of internal damage given what I see externally. Also, OEM parts or bust. Aftermarket stuff never fits right.

I will never again buy a Purolator oil filter from advance auto.

Got a call from my wife today at work, one of the mechanics at the shop (she works in the office) noticed a huge puddle of oil under her jeep. I had just changed the oil Sunday. I rode down to check it out and noticed the o ring in the oil canister seemed to be pinched. So I took it off and re seated it, and it was fine. Then she drove home tonight and said her car was smoking (under the hood) so I figured it was just oil burning off. Wrong! The canister tightened up and the o ring pinched again! It was leaking oil like a sieve. So 4 quarts of oil later and a trip to Walmart to get an OEM Mopar filter and the leak seems to have stopped. But I did notice the o ring for the Purolator was about twice as thick, so I am attributing the problem to that. Luckily we caught it before ALL of the oil puked out of it and I don't have a blown engine to deal with...

Ouch. You caught a huge break there. Your story is just another reason why I stick to OEM parts, with exception to the battery.

Yeah. I got suckered into the $24.99 oil change special. Which ended up being a $32 oil change special because her jeep takes 6 quarts. and then add on 2 additional quarts of oil the first time ($12), then a new Mopar filter ($10) and another 2 quarts of oil ($12)... the most expensive oil change ever has finished. but I guess I should be thankful it's not any worse.

I did this with an Alero once. Changed the oil and started the car and oil came gushing out from where the oil filter mates to the block. We put the old filter back on and filled it back up again but the car never ran right again so we traded it on the only new car we've ever bought.

That's the one thing I take my car to the dealership for - oil changes. I buy those "buy 5 get 5 free" packages, and the dealership does a full inspection, changes the oil and filter, and washes my car for under $17/oil change.

I do my own oil changes. But the lengthening change intervals and my advancement in my craft as an shade tree auto mechanic means when I do it it's not really for the 'fun' anymore. If so I tend to try and bundle with other projects.

Lately I've just been buying a new car every year instead of making it to the change interval.

Speaking of, trying to buy a Delorean next weekend. *crosses fingers*

The make an FC that fits in the palm of your hand and plugs into the cig lighter. I thought about getting one of those but really I want nothing to do with it.

I have to work out a deal with the seller before I worry about that stuff though, need to get my ducks in a row.

It's more of a convenience for me. It takes me 15 minutes to do it myself. Taking it to the dealer ultimately results in a 1-1.5 hour process where I almost certainly have to argue with a service manager over the fact that I should get a transmission fluid flush for $495.

My subaru makes it really easy to change oil. The filter is literally right there when i open the hood. That said when I bought my car I got free oil changes for the life of the car as part of the negotiation process... so I just take it there to have it done. I schedule ahead online and am in and out within 30 minutes normally. Get a free car wash and they check everything else out as well etc.
