Cars & Bikes, Driving & Riding
I've been looking at used cars (ugh), since my Jeep's getting older and the miles are up there. I got into this thinking a hybrid was the way to go, but it's looking like hybrids are anywhere from $7-$10K more for similar models. Unless gas really does hit $10 a gallon, it would take around 100K miles of driving before that difference is recouped (using my rudimentary back of the napkin math) so is there any real reason to go hybrid over ICE?

If you're gonna go hybrid, may as well go new instead of used. The battery technology (and stupidly enough the price) is better.

Are there any federal rebates for hybrids? Haven't checked that stuff in a while.

Not for just hybrids. Plug in hybrids, yes. Depends on the size of the plug in battery. In fact, many of those rebates are large enough that the more expensive PHEV ends up being less than the straight HEV style.

Thanks for the info! I might have to look into new and see what's available, aside from not much, ha.

PIAA makes blade inserts that fit into the original wiper beams that came with my car. I use those because they waste less material than replacing the entire beam as an integrated unit.

Speaking of RainX, the spray not the wiper blade - I've been driving my wife's Accord lately, and it always annoys me at how dirty the back windshield gets after it rains. The water beads up, dirt or pollen gets on it, and when it dries, the pollen and dirt are left behind. If I treat the back windshield with RainX, that should help with that, right? I'm used to a van or SUV with a rear wiper to keep things...visible.

It will, but only for a time. Pollen seems to just duck everything up.

The Minivan has made a comeback:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/minivan-sa ... eatst_pos5The average price of new minivans as a category was up 43% nationwide in the first quarter of 2022 from the same quarter in 2017, the largest percentage gain of any vehicle category, reports Edmunds.com, a car-information site. Prices of three-year-old Dodge Grand Caravans were up 64% in the quarter from the year-earlier quarter—to just over $25,000—making them the vehicle in the popular used-car-age group that has climbed the most by percentage.
