A brand new 2018 Chevy Cruze hatchback. It's a turd inside and out.

It's hard for me to comprehend people that buy cars they don't love. Probably in the same way my neighbor can't understand why I don't give a flying **** about my yard. The car-as-appliance mentality is just really strange to me given cars are usually one of the most substantial purchases people make.

Agreed completely. I couldn't do it, but I know people who have.

I'm not saying you have to go out and spend on some fantastic car, either. My daily driver is a $5,000 car that's old enough to have its own drivers license but I look forward to driving it every single time I get in.

To be fair the car was gifted to me, so all I paid was the title transfer fee of 90 some odd dollars. It is a turd, manual windows and locks, but I'm glad I didn't spend any real sum of money for it.

Your mistake was that you didn't push the Sonic down a steep hill.

We had 2005 Dodge Neon, still to this day the only car we ever bought brand new. It had power windows up front and cranks in the rear.

I'd like to see the reasoning for power in the front and crank in the back.

Added punishment for anyone caught sitting in the back seat of a Neon.

Cost and weight savings. We used to haul lifeguards in it when we worked at the beach.

I remember when passenger side view mirrors weren't even standard on cars. My dad bought my mom one as a present once.

I agree with this wholeheartedly up to a certain extent of course. I get tired of hearing about how terrible an investment a car is. To your point, my wife and I both commute 40 minutes to an hour-plus each way every day. That's almost two hours of my day every day, or like 8% of my life during the week (assuming I don't drive anywhere else). Of course I want to be comfortable and actually enjoy myself driving. Whether it's a nice audio system, infotainment, etc.

Yup. When I car shop the very first thing I look at is the cockpit view. It's the part of the car I have to look at all day. Similar to my house; my neighbor dotes on his lawn all hours of the day and I'm the one that actually sees it. Really unfair for him, that.

How often to yinz change out your car batteries? Do you want until they're dead? My Wrangler seems to be cranking over a little slow. It's 5 years old and just under 90K miles.

If it’s noticeably slower while cranking, I’d probably consider picking up a new battery to avoid having to find a ride if it dies on you.

That's what I was thinking. It occurred to me today that I've never had to replace the battery in any of the 6 vehicles I've owned.

Especially if it's slower now while it's hot... it's gonna die once the weather turns.

Noticed a weird noise on my wife’s CR-V yesterday. With the AC on, after coming to a stop, the compressor will cycle off and we hear a very faint whine, almost like letting air slowly out of a balloon. Never happens with the AC off.

Sounds a little like this, only much, much shorter (and no, the system isn’t overcharged):

I wait til they're almost dead. I usually carry a jump pack with me if I know it's in its way out.

Auto parts stores will test them for you free of charge, but I don't think they've ever told anyone their battery is fine :)

I've only replaced a battery once, and I admit that I replaced it at the point where I had to beg a jump from my neighbor in order to drive to the auto-parts store. I then had to beg a jump from a guy in the parking lot so that I could drive to the Hyundai dealership because I'd just learned that my Hyundai used some weird battery size that companies like Duralast, Optima, etc. didn't bother making. I wised up by the time I got to the dealership and left my car running until I confirmed that they had a battery in stock. I think that battery was nine or ten years old by that time.

TL;DR version: When it's basically dead.

I got my wife this bad boy for her birthday...it's a really nice unit and super durable. Thinking about getting one for my car too.

Thought for a second you got her a car battery and I was going to ask who you retained for your side of the divorce...

My Mom was given a Kirby vacuum cleaner by my step-dad when I was a toddler and it still comes up once or twice a year.
