Maybe he's selling because the power stroke can't tow it? #cumminsguy
 :thumb:

But just so we're clear, Duramax > Cummins > PS
Well obviously. What a Duramax does with 8 a Cummins can do with 6 though :pop:

(I would take a LBZ Dmax over my 12 valve any day. But that's about the only thing.)

In the process of finalizing a new-car purchase. I'm going to buy a Kia Forte5 SX hatchback with the turbo engine and a six-speed manual transmission. The final candidates were down to the Forte5 hatch and the Mazda3 hatch, but I decided to go with the Kia. To get the same level of equipment as the Kia I would have had to buy an optioned-out Mazda3 S Grand Touring, which would have cost me something like $4,000 over the Kia. Plus, while reviewers all seem to love the Mazda's handling and interior, all of the reviews I read—even the highly complimentary ones—mentioned that it has a loud interior with lots of wind and road noise; they used terms like "tiresome" and "profound" to refer to the noise levels. The Kia's reviews mention that it's quiet for its class.

Would like to hear some firsthand accounts of your experience with the car after you settle in. I'm going to be in the market for a 5-door hatch, soon. The Mazda is currently at the top of my list; not sure how much the noisy interior would be a thing for me, as I prefer driving with the windows down.

Will do. You'll certainly have more options if you're shopping for an automatic. Subaru, VW, and Hyundai, for example, only offer manuals with the lower trim levels of the Impreza, Golf, and Elantra GT. I would have almost certainly bought another Hyundai, but the decided to put most of the best options (e.g., leather seats, sunroof, backup camera) for the Elantra GT hatch into a certain option package, and then they made that option package unavailable with a manual. The manual on the diesel Golf can be ordered on any trim level, but diesel Golfs get really expensive really fast. I didn't look at the Ford Focus due to the poor reliability scores.

You could get a 6 speed GTI for $25K. Is that over your budget? I'm still not sold on the Korean cars.

My first two "new" cars were GTI's 1983 (the first year that they made them) and 1985 when they changed the body style from Rabbit to Golf.
The 1983 was my favorite car until I had the C300.

VW's new platform, which will eventually underpin all of their cars as well as Audi's, Skoda's, etc, is getting good reviews. I'm trying to get a few more years out of my Jetta and will probably buy a manual Golf, Golf Wagon, or GTI then. That's about as much car as I'm willing to spend on.

The GTI model I would want (SE, 4-door, 6-speed) would have an "out-the-door target price" of $29,602 according to Kelley Blue Book (that includes taxes and all fees). The car I am buying (Forte5, SX, 6-speed, Style Package) will have an out-the-door price of $22,314. A Mazda3 equipped the way I would have wanted (S Touring) would run $24,160 out the door.

I have no problem buying a Korean car, considering I've been driving one (a Hyundai) for 12 years. The Korean cars also assuage concerns with longer warranties. Mazda and VW offer 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranties and 5/60 powertrain warranties. Kias and Hyundais come with 5/60 b-to-b warranties and 10/100 powertrain warranties. At the same point a Mazda or WV is going entirely off warranty, the Koran cars are just going off the b-to-b.

Though mac usually gives the best answer to this question if you're in SWPA.

Shyster, all I can say is test drive the Forte and the GTI. If you don't think there's 6K more fun driving the GTI, I'd be surprised.
But then again, I'm not sure if you're a "driver", or just view a vehicle as transportation.

Rode the RC-51 to work today, more out of determination than anything else. It's going to be in the mid-70s this afternoon but it was a brisk 39F on the way in.

ive used tire rack pretty regularly for the last 5 years or so but i do not think they are that much more cost effective after mounting/balancing/etc that most shops include with a purchase

Really? If that's true that's great, but every shop I used in NC charged for everything they could think of. Merchants Tire is an awful place, I'd rather walk than give them my business ever again.

Laurel Garden is pretty fair. I had to get a tire replaced due to potholes, and they found the rim (front right) was bent, so they swapped it with the back right wheel. I think that cost about $125 or so, total (new tire, installation, and swapping).

I appreciate a car that drives and handles well, but at the same time I'm finding smoothness and a quiet interior matter to me more now than they did when I was in my 20s. I certainly know the Forte isn't going to be as sporty as a GTI or a car like the Focus ST (or even maybe the Mazda3), but I think it will be enough for me. I am buying the SX trim with the 201-hp turbo engine, so it's not going to be pokey.

Does your insurance company offer a service to negotiate with the dealer? I know @Columbia used his and they were able to get the price down by 1,000's.

You're right. You're looking at nearly a hundo for mounting and balancing if you don't buy tires at a tire shop. It may be far for you but some posters have said it's the cheapest option. www.mongelltire.com is my uncle's shop, in Scottdale and Connellsville PA. His price will be the entire price (excluding tax).

So, I had a job the last three plus years that I absolutely loved. Then a private equity firm took Riverbed private and I was laid off. I was truly bummed. Fortunately I had had built up quite a reputation, more than I realized. On Friday, I accepted a new job that is even better than the one I held. The money is as good, and there's an opportunity to build a practice for this new firm that could potentially result in a significant personal financial gain.
Why do I bring this up? Because I'm ready to pull the trigger on a new ride:
