Cars & Bikes, Driving & Riding

Who has two thumbs and after leaving his sisters wedding and putting his sleeping daughter into her car seat put the key fob on top of the car and drove off, heard something (key fob) fall off the car and thought “huh… a branch must have hit my roof”…

This guy.

The house key and mailbox key was on it too. Awesome.

Luckily I have a second fob. Still sucks.

Sucks more than this?

My replacement fob was $289.44.

I think had I stopped 20 minutes from home when my kid asked for a potty break, it would have sucked worse because I would have been stuck there with no way to get back home.

So no, my situation didn't suck worse than that, but certainly had the potential to.

That's true. I was fully aware that my smart key was no longer present, so I knew not to shut the car off.

I've never tried but I think my wife's ford will disable after 15 minutes of driving. I'm guessing it'd alert first? Also it knows if the key is in or outside by inches, surprised it didn't know that it was outside.

I did a ton of googling for our particular make and model (Kia Sportage).

- It will only disable if the car gets put in park. While you're driving, it will continue to go with no alert. If you put it in park, it will turn on a loud annoying sound (I know this sound from getting out to check my mail with the fob in my pocket and the car in park) and you'll not be able to put it into drive. It will also (understandably) not turn back on if you turn the car off. I googled "What happens if I throw my key fob out the window while driving?"

-It knows if the fob is in or out by a bit, but again, the keys were on the roof of the car. So even if by inches, it's in the zone of making the car think the fob was in the car.

I did wonder if like the car just throws itself into park at the 15 minute mark or what lol.

I’m actually not a big fan of the keyless start/stop in vehicles. C2i’s example is one reason, the other being that my wife or I will leave the key fob in our jacket and forget to leave it in the car when we get home. So the next time one of us goes to drive the car, we have to search around for the key.

I wasn't a fan at first as I had always just had a key. But then I started to get used to it and was fine with it. Now it angers me again.

I was actually looking at Ford Maverick prices yesterday. I park near one and heard it drive into the parking lot in stealth mode, not realizing they made them with a hybrid option. They start at $29K. Rangers start at $31K. Although it's unlikely you'd ever find one at that price.

Chevy, which I prefer, doesn't even offer a smaller pickup here. Colorados start in the mid-$30s.

Then the work truck prices with these two manufacturers are insane. $80K for an Econoline box truck, $70K for a flat bed (non dumping!) Silverado HD2500. It's madness.

I started looking for old S-10s. We are probably going to need a fourth car (dammit) and I'd like something to haul stuff around in that's cheap for property taxes and insurance (in SC we pay property tax on vehicles each year). $5000 for a 4 cylinder 23 year old truck with 190K miles on it. Also madness.

If I were in the market for a pickup, I doubt I'd look further than a Tacoma. Great styling, and they've not massive boats.

Good point. My brother has had two of them. I wished he'd kept his '08 for me tbh. Looks like they still make them with a manual transmission, too.

A Laramie trim 2024 Cummins diesel comes in under $80k before tax. Probably slightly over with TTT. I'm not saying that's a deal by any means but that truck has significantly more options than the WT Chevy in the picture.

A friend of mine has a white WT in college. We joked that WT stood for white trash.

I have a 2012 Civic, and there are many times I'm stopped at a light with a truck next to me and I notice that the wheels/tires on some of these trucks are higher than the top of my door (where the window rolls into, not the top frame).

I inevitably see these trucks driving a single person to the grocery store, where they can't effectively maneuver them in the parking lot. It really might be one of the stupidest things Americans do on a large scale.

There are a few people in my wife's extended family that have those big huge trucks and not a single one of them hauls any of them around. It just seems silly, but not my money I guess.

And always driven by some 5 foot nothing midget that needs a seat booster to see over the steering wheel.

We go on 8-10 camping trips a year in our 35 foot camper. Thus I have one.

I'd rather have a Honda. If I could find a cheap enough one, I'd have two vehicles. But the cost doesn't make sense.

I like my Uncle's setup. He and his wife each have their commuter cars, and they have an old F250 'farm truck' that he uses to actually haul stuff. Whether it be for landscaping or taking mountain bikes out to the trail. You know, using a utility vehicle for utility tasks. You and my uncle are not the people we're talking about.

It's the **** dorks that buy fully loaded crew cabs with short beds that perpetually have a tonneau cover on it, like this:

The vehicle they're looking for is a minivan.

I wish they would bring back the excursion, a 3/4 ton SUV. That would allow me to have one family vehicle and one small car.
