What musical instrument(s) can you play?

Postby NTP66 » Fri Oct 21, 2016 1:34 pm

I can reproduce a bunch of songs on guitar, but i dont think learning songs with guitar tabs really counts as being able to play...so 0.
Disagree completely, personally.
I always wonder about people who play Tele's.
You don't like Keith Richards?
Not even a little bit.

Played a mean harmonica as a younger man. Lost my taste for it.

Can play bass, although I haven't actually played in a couple of years. Mrs P can play flute and piccolo. Hoping the kids will be interested in learning to play an instrument.

I started playing guitar in 1983, and I still play pretty much every day. As columbia notes, playing guitar means I can also play bass, which is useful. We have a 66-key Casio keyboard and I can noodle around a bit on that; I can play some more simplistic things (like the slow bit from the Moonlight Sonata, Linus & Lucy, etc), and I can crack out a mean cover version of 'Jump'. The only time I ever tried playing a cello I played the tapping part from 'Eruption', and it worked out well.

I would love to learn how to play violin. Percussion is hard to do good.

I played clarinet for one year in elementary school i think. I have no idea why i picked that , or if it was forced upon me. It is still a spot of embarrassment to this day. lol.

Can play Violin. Mechanically I know how. Not any good though. My daughter now owns my violin.

Have a Steck baby grand in my living room. I can play. With practice I can play a piece well. Beethoven Patetique, Moonlight, Chopin Polonaises and Nocturnes, Brahms Rhapsodies, etc. Helps that I can sight read pretty well. But good sightreading doesn't mean playing it well musically though. Requires far more practice time than I haev to spend.

(Sightreading works well as a vocalist too, but the thread didn't ask that)

I wouldn't call it a necessity, but I personally couldn't imagine playing without being able to read music.

Mrs P can play flute
:thumb: As a huge Jethro Tull fan, I've always wanted to learn.

Vox is most definitely an instrument, and is the only one I might feel comfortable with in front of people.

I've played bass, but never put in the time to get good. I now have a cheap acoustic guitar I mess around with occasionally, but I'm not very good.

Mrs K. can play piano and clarinet.

I can read music, but have a hard time figuring out tempo without a metronome and some help.

So if a song say it's 100 BPM, and I've heard it before, I can ballpark the tempo. If I'm going in blind and have no idea what the listening tempo is (just have the number on the sheet), I'm lost.

Even if it's a known song, when I sit down to play I tend to play a good 10 bpm too fast as a baseline. Which sucks balls when playing a challenging piece like 'Midnight Express', and 2 minutes in my fret hand cramps up cos I'm a dolt.

Guitar and trumpet at the most novice levels. Piano intermediately. I learned during college using those Thompson level course booklets up through most of grade four. Then got bored with the songs and the time it took to learn them. So jumped up to some Chopin and final fantasy songs and have been working on them for ten years on and off
Recently I learned the first bit of the song on the last game of thrones episode. I don't have any table or chairs in my apt but I do have a grand piano. And own a Steinway console

Now? None. But I was in band from 4th to 11th grade. I started on drums, then moved to clarinet for 5th grade, and played alto sax from 6th grade on. I took some guitar lessons a couple years ago, but never really practiced enough to even consider myself a novice.

I play guitar well enough to have fooled 14,000+ people into subscribing to me on YouTube. I can also play keys enough to get by i.e. the more you drink the better I sound.
As for Telecasters
As if any of yunz give a ****
I have two, and won't play anything else.
As for Keith Richards; he's always been a player, and if you don't get that, you don't know jack.

Cello since the age of 6. Most expensive thing I own and worth every bit of it.

My comment about Tele's was just me messing with @columbia. Congrats on being a fan of them.

That said, my comment about Richards still stands. I don't like his music, and he's not in my top 10. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not I "get" anything. It's as simple as that.
