Never give the lender a free loan if you can avoid it. Just make sure that you don't miss an insurance premium payment, because the lender can then force you to carry an escrow account so that it doesn't happen again.

Taxes are done (came close to breaking even), and then I received a letter from our local tax collector telling me that I owe them $2300 in earned income taxes from 2018. Not sure why they think that, but I'll be providing them copies of our W2s showing that we did, in fact, pay local taxes that year. This is the first year that our township started using Berkheimer to collect taxes, and I already hate them.
Just got another one of these, this time for 2019. I e-mailed them asking them to just go ahead and send me 2020 and 2021's bills now so that I can scan all of this **** at once and send it to them.
My wife and I both received notices, again, for 2022. I personally mailed this **** using THEIR OWN RETURN ENVELOPE. But they never received it.

It takes a real man to prepare his tax return within 3 hours of the extension deadline

That's what I did today. It took several people to try to get me out of a state-tax hell loop...

I may be in the worst possible situation ever...company is in Philly, refused/ignored my residence changing (in 2021), continue to withhold PA tax, continue to withhold Philly tax, subleased a portion of the office out so I'm "forced" to work remotely, NY takes all income into account no matter what, NYC also has a crippling death tax...what an absolute scam...

Just finally e-filed about an hour ago...

**** Berkheimer
Yep. We got another letter from them a month or so ago, and had to send them yet another W2. They're incompetent NTP66s. This past time, they told me that they never received the forms that I sent them. I don't know if I want to send them via registered mail next time, or just go through the normal routine since I know neither will make a difference.

I recently was wage garnished for a $5 per capita tax from last year by Berkheimer. I don't remember receiving the 2022 tax or any notice of delinquency. I did get, and pay, the 2023 per capita tax.

I know it's only $5, but these guys are so bad that I would fight them over it.

Berkheimer is terrible, but they are no Central Tax.

They are all the worst. The absolute worst. I’d rather get 1,000 emails from some outsourced person in India than one more interaction with a local tax authority

Just a reminder for the PA people, even though local taxes are withheld from your paychecks, you're still required to file a local return.

Yeah, we have no choice here. Why this isn't automated somehow is beyond me.

You'll likely get a notice at some point. Potential penalties - minor, that can likely be abated, but you'll get the pleasure of dealing with them (see above  )

Also, keep in mind that this is also a two way street with your payroll department. I've done taxes for many a client that their PR department is withholding for the wrong locality at the wrong rate. That can foul things up as well. I realize there are reciprocities but all I know is I had to sort it out with Berkheimer/Keystone, etc. and it was a headache. However, these are also things that could have been nipped in the bud if people would EVER look at their paystubs. The amount of people that just assume their paychecks/stubs are always correct is astounding. My favorite is the guy that made $80k/yr but only had $30 withheld every pay. This is *after* we had a discussion about adjusting his withholdings after he owed the feds a substantial amount. LOOK. AT. YOUR. PAYSTUB.

I'm trying to reclaim my Philly wage tax (~4%!) as I haven't lived there in 2.5 years. It appears that they have a spreadsheet where I need to fill in my hours and the location of where I worked for every working day of each tax year in question...I get you don't to give up that money that you thieved, but man alive...

What a system...

I did this for years for my Philly wage tax refund. The newer system is much better, and you should not complain given what it used to be like. Trust me.

Have you ever filled out this dumb **** Excel sheet? I'm really good with Excel, but I feel like I might have to write a small script to fill this in for me correctly because there are drop-downs, as opposed to just open fields...

They should have a downloadable version where you can simply copy and paste? They have in the past. I don’t recall any drop downs, but it’s been a while.

I got an audit notice today from 2021. I haven't yet figured out what exactly the issue was but generally speaking, I have a non qualified stock option exercised that year. I paid payroll tax in the exercise. Am I then paying capital gains tax on top of that? So like a $15k transaction should have almost $10k in taxes or am I off cause that's what it seems the IRS is saying. I exercised and sold the shares immediately.
