I've only had Bojangles once, and wasn't impressive. IIRC, @columbia is a fan.

There's a road in the lovely area of North Charleston that contains all chicken related fast food joints. We spent a day sampling items in an effort to form a consensus opinion. Luckily we were also off the following day. From how I remember the results:
- Chick-Fil-A was deemed "too mainstream" and didn't factor into our final rankings.
1.) Popeye's: Best "loose chicken", fries, and sweet tea.
2.) Bojangle's: Their chicken isn't as good as Popeye's, but they won the biscuit competition, the side dish competition, and their biscuit sandwiches are unrivaled. Booberry biscuits are great as well.
3.) Zaxby's: Good, but overpriced. Their use of toast instead of biscuits is odd, but the chicken is good.
4.) KFC: Probably deserved to be considered "too mainstream" as well, but overall their chicken, biscuits, and sides just didn't stack up. Their earned some points for centering a product around their best offering (mashed potatoes).
So far last that it doesn't deserve a number.) Church's Chicken: Just gross. Everything is just gross.
As far as burgers go, some people like to dump on Five Guys, but I love it. The winner is definitely In-N-Out though. Had it for the first time this summer and it lived up to all the hype.
Groton, CT being the dump that it is, the two closest restaurants to Subase that were worth eating at were Five Guys and Popeye's. Needless to say I put on some weight before I got out of the Navy.

The closest White Castle to me is an hour away, in Edison, NJ. I love them, but that's just too far.

Speaking of out of town fast food, I have family in San Antonio, and in their neck of the woods they have Whataburger, which is tremendous.
In DC, they have Shake Shack (which is not just limited to DC but is not in our area to my knowledge), which I would literally punch a <insert something adorably cute here> to have in Pittsburgh. So absolutely freaking GOOD. Was there in December and almost had a total meltdown when I went to SS and it was packed. Like, threw a <female dog> fit to my boyfriend. We went back in about an hour and I found my zen place.

We've got Shake Shacks all over the Philly area. I'm a fan, as well - especially their shakes.Source of the post In DC, they have Shake Shack (which is not just limited to DC but is not in our area to my knowledge), which I would literally punch a <insert something adorably cute here> to have in Pittsburgh. Speaking of regional chains I enjoy Capriottis, they have a sub called the bobbie-oven roasted turkey, stuffing, and cranberry stuffing. It comes with mayo too; I order it dry. I think that chain originated in the Wilmington, DE area.

I know Mad Mex doesn't fall into the fast food category, but they have their Gobblerito available right now, which is basically Thanksgiving dinner wrapped in a tortilla. It is phenomenal in every way.

Popeye's is based in New Orleans, so it wins the fried chicken competition. It's the closest thing to a soul food chain restaurant.
@Dickie Dunn, did you try Church's Chicken? There was one up by the old Navy base, iirc.

Yes. It came in an unranked last. Granted it could be location based, North Charleston isn't exactly the pinnacle of human existence, but it was not good. Chicken was greasy as hell. The biscuits are terrible. The fries are likely just Ore-Ida. Too many better options around.Popeye's is based in New Orleans, so it wins the fried chicken competition. In-N-Out (Double Double w cheese animal style)
BK (Whopper)
Carl's Jr (Single Star w cheese)
Pretty much every other place

True story: two NOLA trips ago we were planning on going to Willie Mae's only to find out it was closed that day. Jumped online to find an alternative fried chicken solution and saw an article from NOLA. com that ranked the best places in the city. Popeye's was #7 iirc.

I haven't had fast food in a while (by while I mean years). But when the bus home goes through Oakland and the kids get on with boxes of Popeye's chicken, I'm so tempted to get off the bus and go buy some.
I do like Popeye's.
