Cell phone advice

Postby MWB » Wed Aug 17, 2016 2:54 pm

My iPhone 5s has a battery life of about 2 hours now, so am looking to get a new phone. Also switching from att to Verizon. I will probably get an android this time, to help cut costs. Can anyone recommend a good android phone that would be somewhat comparable in performance to what I currently have?

You can buy and replace your iPhone battery for about $15 on Amazon.

Just did it recently and it was pretty easy. Took less than 15 minutes.

Do you want a regular sized phone or a phablet?

When I did it years ago for Iphone 3, it took me MUCH longer that that. And it involved cursing Steve Jobs many, many times.

I have never owned Iphone product since... :)

Mrs. Tom went for the v10 and I wish I had, too. It's quite nice, but I settled for the LG G Vista2.

I want a regular size phone. Definitely not phablet.
Thanks for battery switch advice. I also want to switch to Verizon though, and can't keep the phone.

Cell phone advice

I will be trading in my super old Galaxy S9 for S22. Every internet article says that before factory reset, I am supposed to encrypt the phone. But, my phone simply does not have the "encrypt" option anywhere (other than "encrypt SD card"). I finally found somewhere that starting with Android 10 (which my S9 has), phones are encrypted by default automatically.

Anybody knows more about this stuff?

Thanks!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought default device encryption started with like an Android 5 or 6 build many moons ago. So you should be good to do with an S9. You can check encryption status in Settings via I think the Screen Lock submenu.

If you're really paranoid about your personal data, after you perform the factory reset, you can then refill the device memory with complete junk files (like a few 4k movies), and then do another factory reset from that state.

Well, just got off the phone with Verizon. Received a bill (by mail) for a new phone and phone number that were not mine. They cancelled the number and the account, and are now looking into how someone at a store was able to purchase a phone last week and open an account under my name and address. Fun times ahead, surely...

Dumb question time.

Is there a way to backup photos/video from an iPhone to a USB thumbdrive? Only other device available is an iPad.

My obvious answer is to connect the phone and USB drive to a PC and transfer that way, but the person doesn't have one.

Search "iPhone thumb drive" on Amazon. There might be a limitation as to which connector style you can find, but I'm sure the product exists.

She filled her Google Photos, and the paid tier she upgraded to, hence the desire for offline storage.

Though it is weird she wants them moved to a thumb drive that she can't retrieve them from later...

Google ended unlimited storage for Photos two or three years ago iirc. The current free storage cap is 15 GB, but that spans all Google services (Gmail, Docs, Drive, etc). Here's the thing though: Files uploaded prior to that don't count against the cap. So your friend filed up their 15 gigs of free space plus whatever they're paying for on top of that in three years. Did they create their account since the cap was put in place? That's a lot of storage.

Right now I'm using 89gb of storage on my own paid plan.

I am not a heavy iOS user, but one of the cooler things I noticed is their version of File Explorer (is it Finder on iOS? That's what it's called on this Macbook Air I'm using) can connect multiple cloud storage services and it treats them like they are networked drives.

So when my wife left her previous school district, she opened her connected school district Drive account and moved a bunch of documents and files over to our family iCloud account and then a few months later back to her new districts' Drive account. All the clouds, talking to one another. It was beautiful.

Maybe something like that would work? They could then access iCloud on a Windows PC or Mac and put photos on a thumb drive as well. Redundancy n'at.

If she has a router that you can attach a thumb drive to, then you can use that by turning the router into a NAS drive. The CX File Exchange app can then be installed on her phone and then you can transfer files to the thumb drive using the app.
