Damn, that's only a mile from John Wayne...I flew out of there a few years back. There has to be something especially awful/terrifying about crashing so close to the airport, and probably seeing people merrily going about their shopping as you know your death is likely imminent.

I saw a show on the Science Channel about the design of this aircraft [Airlander 10] last week, but this is the first time I'm seeing the interior. The glass floors would be pretty damn cool to experience.

0% chance I don't just lay on the glass and pretend I'm Superman during takeoff.

Awesome video, although unfortunately for Rolls-Royce a more apropos video would be "How We Fix All Those Trent 1000s." Rolls has been having serious durability problems with the compressor blades on several versions of the Trent 1000, which is Rolls-Royce's engine option for the Boeing 787. It's bad enough that the FAA cut the ETOPS rating of the 787 with some versions of the Trent 1000 from over 300 minutes down to 60 minutes, which in many cases meant that the affected aircraft could no longer fly their intended routes. Major users of the Trent in the 787 are British Airways (no shocker there), Air New Zealand, LATAM Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and All Nippon Airlines. At one point ANA had something like a dozen of its 787s parked and waiting for refurbished engines, and some of the airlines have had to lease aircraft to fill in for their grounded 787s. Rolls did come out with a new version of the 1000—the Trent 1000 TEN—that fixes the problems, but there are hundreds of prior versions in service.

This is the kind of calm I want to see out of the pilots captaining my flights:

An apparently suicidal mechanic stole a Horizon Air (subsidiary of Alaskan Airlines) Bombardier Q400 turboprop airliner from SeaTac Airport, took off without authorization, and circled over parts of Seattle before crashing on or near Ketron Island in Puget Sound. At one point the mechanic was doing loops and barrel rolls. Lots of video and audio clips here:

http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/22 ... 0-airliner

If anyone is wondering whether commercial aircraft have the equivalent of ignition keys (or some other form of authorized-user lockout), the answer is actually "no." Small general-aviation aircraft can have keys, but commercial aircraft do not. The doors don't even lock. Keys have been seen as unnecessary and inconvenient for a number of reasons, including the logistics of commercial aircraft being flown by multiple crews each day, the fact that commercial aircraft generally live on secured airport grounds, the fact that aircraft parked at gates need external pushback to back up, and the fact that most people wouldn't know how to even start the engines on a commercial aircraft, let alone take off.

ATC: "He just needs some help controlling the aircraft."

Nutter: "Nah, I've played some video games before."

Also, there's at least one video that shows him completing a loop and he's no more than a few dozen feet off the water.

Yeah, saw the video this morning. Crazy stuff. I’m not sure what was going on with him, but he seemed more depressed than crazy based on the conversation I read. Glad he didn’t injure anyone else.

That was insane. Yeah, the more I read the story the sadder it is. That said, the idiot put others in danger with his actions. You bet your ass those jet pilots had their finger on the trigger.

My word, I'm listening to the ATC from the SEA-TAC incident, and it's just so sad. The controller is so calm throughout, and the hijacker is absolutely wackadoodle.

It should be noted that while the footage doesn't really give a sense of it, that happened in a fairly dense environment not far from a hospital.

I thought this was cool. The size difference between an A380 and an Embraer 145:

The 380 carries the equivalent of around 10 or 11 fully-loaded 145s in fuel weight.

Call me crazy but I like the 145. Give me the one seat side and lets go!

Amen to the one seat side. Best place on any airplane.
