It was a little unclear at first as to what the cause of death was. The Philly medical examiner has said that the passenger died of blunt impact trauma to her head, neck, and torso, which was caused by her being partially pulled through the blown-out window. She was sitting next to the window and was wearing her seat belt.

Cause of engine failure was a fatigue crack on one of the fan blades. The crack was on the rear of the blade and was not visible from the front of the engine. I've seen some rather ill-informed articles attempting to question the reliability of the engine in question, but the CFM-56 is one of the best-selling and most-used engines in aviation. It's been the exclusive engine for the 737 since the Classic generation (the -300/-400/-500 models, which first flew in 1981) is one of two engines options (and the most popular option) for the A320ceo family, and is also used on versions of the A340 as well as multiple military aircraft. I'm sure well over 10,000 of them were in the air today. I'm pretty sure this was not a systemic problem with the engine.

And the pilot seems like the type who would appreciate it as a kind gesture. Despite how incredibly rare this was, it also means that my daughter will no longer be sitting in the window seat.Source of the post and thus ends my desire to ever take a window seat ever again.

I recently switched to sitting on the aisle, partially because I'm sick of being squished against the wall by people in the middle seat.
Now I'm never going back to the window seat.

It will actually be interesting to see if this leads to a LOT of people starting to adopt the same policy when flying. Would your practice change if you were sitting in front of the engine?

I always sit in front of the engine, where it's quieter.
Edit: Or level with the engine, since that's the least turbulent area of the plane.

this stinks I always sit aisle because I get more leg room and don't have to climb over anyone to go pee and now everyone is going to want to sit aisle

Delta flight forced to land because of an engine fire. Not sure if it's the same make/model as the Southwest jet.

Shyster's the expert here, but I don't think that any variants of the Airbus in the Delta incident use the same GE powerplant as on the SWA 737.

A person dies on a US airliner for the first time in 9 years and everybody freaks. Incredible.
It is kind of incredible people saw commercial aviation through to this point. I have a book on the Lockheed Constellation and from the 40s through the 60s people were dying on just that plane every year, not to mention the comparable Douglas, Convair, Boeing etc. aircraft
I will continue to not have any particular safety concerns on US airlines.

It's listed on FlightAware as a A321, and some quick Googling says that it might be the same type of engine, depending on the specific model of 321. Interesting, but probably a freaky coincidence.

Same.I will continue to not have any particular safety concerns on US airlines.
Just take the train, oh wait, they derail.
Just take a car, oh wait, any number of horrible things happen every day.

*Death because of a catastrophic incident. Wanted to note that.A person dies on a US airliner* for the first time in 9 years and everybody freaks. Incredible.
I'm guessing in 9 years people have died on planes for various reasons.

I'm certainly not freaking out over it, but you'd better believe that I'm going to move my daughter out of that seat 'just in case'.

The article llipgh2 linked ID'd the type as an A333, and the photo matches that. It's listed on FlightAware as a A321, and some quick Googling says that it might be the same type of engine, depending on the specific model of 321. Interesting, but probably a freaky coincidence.

Yes. The only widebody the CFM-56 is used on its the four-engine A340. It's a (relatively) small engine. Twinjet widebodies like the A330 use different, bigger families of engines. According to the folks on airliners.net, that particular A330 was powered by Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines.Shyster's the expert here, but I don't think that any variants of the Airbus in the Delta incident use the same GE powerplant as on the SWA 737.

Not a good look for them.A Southwest Airlines flight bound for Newark made an emergency landing in Cleveland on Wednesday after a window broke, the airline confirmed.

And yet, it’s a completely reasonable decision.

The NTSB just released some tower video from the near-miss at SFO where an Air Canada A320 nearly landed on a taxiway (and the four aircraft waiting on that taxiway). The San Jose Mercury News has helpfully zoomed in the video. Yeah, that was a little closer than I thought it was...
