2016 Rio Summer Olympics Thread

Postby shafnutz05 » Sun Jul 24, 2016 10:02 pm

I figure it's not a bad time to start a thread, with the opening ceremonies a mere two weeks away. The world is watching to see just how big of a train wreck this ends up being, or if we will be surprised and everything runs smoothly. Just caught this today:

http://deadspin.com/rio-olympics-athlet ... 1784219622
This week’s scheduled move-in for the Olympic athletes’ village in Brazil fell flat, as the Australian delegation refused to enter the facilities due to serious issues with plumbing and fire safety.

That’s according to the Sydney Morning Herald, which cites the AOC claiming the Australian athletes arrived today intending to check into their rooms, only to find them “uninhabitable.” The Herald claims the Great Britain and New Zealand delegations found themselves in the same spot upon arrival this weekend.

The Australians discovered water flowing down the walls upon attempting to flush toilets, a strong smell of gas, and exposed wiring. The team is currently staying in hotels to await their accommodations for the Games. Meanwhile:

Sochi was similar I believe. I think nothing major will happen but won't be surprised if its a huge cluster mug either.

There is seemingly no hype going into the Olympics

Here's hoping it'll be a cluster

Anything bad that happens to anyone in Rio is deserved as it's the result of repeated poor decision making. Notice no golfers of relevance are going.

Kind of you. It might be the only revitalization project worth a damn for them.

Even the basketball, which I usually have interest in, is gonna be lame

USA team has Harrison "singlehandedly lost the title" Barnes and the Cold As Ice Brothers, Lowry and DeFrozen

The situation in Rio is far worse than anything in Sochi. Stuff in Sochi was shoddy and hampered by corruption. Rip is a cesspool and a human health risk. The entire country needs to start over.

Agreed. Rio has a significant, imminent disaster public safety risk that simply didn't exist in Sochi. Not to mention a rapidly growing Zika epidemic. Sochi was all corruption, but it ultimately ran fine, save for some issues with the weather for some of the events.

i love the olympics. this olympiad im struggling getting geared up for. i hope our athletes are able to perform well and make it home safely.

non sequitur: i purchased one of the team USA adidas golf hats and the l/xl is definitely not sized correctly. i have several hats of the same brand that fit perfectly and for whatever reason they are smaller. bummer.

A number of athletes have already been mugged. An Austrialian paralympic athlete was taking hostage - by the Rio police. They drove him to 2 different ATMs and made him withdraw significant amounts of cash before letting him go.

Yeah, the Rio Olympics are going to be a disaster.

Was he Paralympic? I only saw that he wasn't participating in Rio 2016.

Either way, Rio is gonna be a complete gong show. I don't think I've watched the summer games since 2008, but I'm half drawn into this one - unfortunately - because of what a potential mess it will be.

I was in a hotel room over the weekend and nothing was on. I turned on a track and field competition on ESPN and it was the absolute worst.

Commercial break.
Talk about the roster for the Women's 300m (dafuq, 300m?) for 5 minutes.
35 second race
Talk about the results for 2 minutes.
Commercial break, tease women's pole vaulting.
Talk about roster for Men's 100m semifinal for 5 minutes
10 second race
Talk about results for 2 minutes.
No pole vaulting.
Commercial break.

Kill me.

Friend of a friend went to Brazil for work about four or five years ago. He was kidnapped and kept in a drugged stupor for like six days, repeatedly taken to the ATM until his account was dry.

Another friend of a friend married a Brazilian girl whose family lived favela adjacent (iirc this was São Paulo). Upon arriving to visit the fam, a woman appeared and pickpocketed the guy. Not wanting to make a scene, he wasn't going to do anything. But the wife took off running after the pickpocket, screaming at her in Portuguese. She ran the lady down after a short distance, whereupon the thief turned around........ and spritzed the guy's wife with freshly squeezed breast milk. Straight from the boob. There endeth the chase.

The Paralympian was mugged earlier. I got my muggings mixed up. It was an Australian in for a jiu-jitsu competition that was kidnapped by the police.

My cousin will probably be wrestling in 2020. I'm glad he was born 4 years later and I'll be watching him in Tokyo instead of Rio. Which is sort of a shame because I've always wanted to visit Rio until all this came out with the World Cup and Olympics

I seriously planned to go to the Brazilian GP in 2011 and ended up cancelling the trip because staying safe was just too much work. I'll go to Canada instead.
