The first time I read it I thought we were in the AB discussion. I was real confused for a moment.

My son pulled a dum-dum off the stick and into his windpipe once. I honestly don't remember whether I back slapped or did a variation of the Heimlich, but my wife said it was amazing how quick it all happened.

in the US and Canada, the Great British Bake Off is called the Great British Baking Show because our corporate overlords at Pillsbury own the trademark to the phrase “Bake-off” somehow

Mama Tif signed up for a clinical trial a short bit ago that included a DNA profile. She got the results back on Friday and it turns out, at least from her half of the contribution, I am:

- 90% Ireland/UK (not a surprise)
- 10% 'Iberian', mixed with Ashkenazi (very much surprise)

(I'm translating that from my 76-year old yinzer mother trying to read the test results)

You're in good company:
Albert Einstein was an Ashkenazi Jew, as were Gertrude Stein and Carl Sagan. Steven Spielberg and Scarlett Johansson are also Ashkenazi Jews, along with three current members of the U.S. Supreme Court (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan).Sep 9, 2014

sympathetic vomiting is believed to be a evolutionary trait among primates. It’s based on the idea that primates eat food in small groups and if one member of the group vomits because of an issue with the food, the rest of the group is naturally encouraged to for their safety

I am disappointed in myself that I did not already know this, but the name for the typographic symbol which consists of three spaced asterisks in a horizontal row, as in

* * *

is a "dinkus." The dinkus is typically used to accentuate a break between subsections in a larger overall section of text.

My daughter was accepted to a local chorus for top high school and college singers and is performing this weekend with the PSO (total dad brag). They’re performing the music of John Williams who of course scored some of the most famous movies of all time.

I guess I never thought about whether he was living or dead, but turns out that at age 91, he’s still scoring movies. His final collab with Spielberg was last year’s Fabelmans and his last score will be Dial of Destiny this year.

Probably people who are up on movies knew this but it was a TIL from last night’s show for me.

As always with stories like this- man if I’m still doing what I love at 91 I’ll have lived a great life.

Yeah, he was at the Golden Globes last month. Looked pretty good for his age, and out and about.

Yoko Ono turned 90 today and no longer appears in public.

TIL about the Voynich Manuscript

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voynich_manuscript

The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated codex hand-written in an unknown script, referred to as 'Voynichese'.[18] The vellum on which it is written has been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438), and stylistic analysis indicates it may have been composed in Italy during the Italian Renaissance.[1][2] The origins, authorship, and purpose of the manuscript are debated. Various hypotheses have been suggested, including that it is an otherwise unrecorded script for a natural language or constructed language; an unread code, cypher, or other form of cryptography; or simply a meaningless hoax.

The manuscript currently consists of around 240 pages, but there is evidence that additional pages are missing. Some pages are foldable sheets of varying sizes. Most of the pages have fantastical illustrations or diagrams, some crudely coloured, with sections of the manuscript showing people, fictitious plants, astrological symbols, etc. The text is written from left to right. The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish-Lithuanian book dealer who purchased it in 1912.[19] Since 1969, it has been held in Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.[20][12][21]

The manuscript has never been demonstrably deciphered, and none of the many hypotheses proposed over the last hundred years have been independently verified.[24] The mystery of its meaning and origin has excited the popular imagination, making it the subject of study and speculation.

John Williams is on the books to conduct the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl in July.

(The last couple years Gustavo Dudamel - Conductor, LAPO - has handled most of the duties for these Bowl concerts. Dudamel is moving to NYPO in a couple years, so between that and JTO's age this will probably be the last time they share the stage.)

I fell down a weird rabbit hole of stories about Kevin Costner being a dick and isolating himself from Yellowstone co-stars, which lead to learning that after he divorced his first wife he fathered a child with girlfriend Bridget Rooney, daughter of Timothy J. Rooney, who is the brother of Dan Rooney, and is currently married to Bill Koch, who is 3 years younger than her father. This might be the most useless set of knowledge I've ever accumulated.

That sounds like when I learned several years ago Rooney Mara is related to both the Rooney family and Mara family. She's a Steeler/Giant

Edit: Then there's this
Rooney Mara's maternal grandfather, Timothy James "Tim" Rooney, has run Yonkers Raceway & Empire City Casino in Yonkers, New York since 1972.
