not only is the suggestion history interesting, but the fact that it never took off while the exclamation point (1400s) did.

Mario Kart started out as F-Zero 2. The idea of making it a kart game came when they couldn't render the faster F-Zero vehicles on such a small map. So they changed it to karts. Then when all the drivers looked the same they came up with the idea of using characters from the Mario universe.
That's wild to me. It was the perfect package for expanding their existing IP and they came to it backward.
The video, if you're into it:

I saw the Gaming Historian just put up a youtube video about Super Mario Kart. I hadn't watched it yet, was that info from that? Norm always puts out great informational videos.Mario Kart started out as F-Zero 2. The idea of making it a kart game came when they couldn't render the faster F-Zero vehicles on such a small map. I didn't even realize that was a new video, hah. I've been rabbit-holing a few vintage gaming channels lately and I put that on as background noise last night. I had already watched his SMB3 video and thought it was great.
I have the Mario Paint one running in the background right now.

Nice one, dodint. I have the SNES console with all the games on the HD, so naturally it has MK and F-Zero. F-Zero is leagues above MK on the SNES console, but MK takes off, obviously.

MK has a really interesting history. How it was originally supposed to be based around Bloodsport, the palette swapped ninjas, Ermac (error macro) being a character, "Toastyyy", becoming the first "too violent for kids" game, etc etc. Not to mention how fun MK2 and 3 were (those were the ones I played the most)Nice one, dodint. I was big into gaming up until I got the Wii. It's the latest console I have. I still remember when my mom bought us the original Nintendo for Christmas. We were really shocked that she would allow us to have it. My brother and I saved every dollar from our paper route to buy games at Toys R Us.

I’m an idiot. When I first responded to you @robbiestoupe for some reason I thought MK = Mortal Kombat, not Mario Kart. Diddy Kong racing is better than Mario Kart 64 overall IMO.
MK64 is great but I think DK racing is the better game and has more variety.

The Diddy Kong controls always felt too loose for me compared to MK64. Even owning both, I always went back to Mario Kart.Diddy Kong racing is better than Mario Kart 64 overall IMO.
