TIL about the status quo in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. It’s an agreement between different religious communities (Judaism, Islam and six sects of Christianity [an Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Syriac Orthodox, Coptic Christians and Ethiopians]) to play nice and leave things as they are for nine different religious sites in the cities

there’s some silly, couple hundred year old drama about a ladder in a church where the different Christian sects argue about who owns the ladder and the ledge that the ladder climbs to
The so-called immovable ladder[c] under the window of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, made of Lebanon cedar wood, was in place by 1728 and has remained there ever since the 1757 status quo was established, aside from being temporarily moved twice. The ladder is referred to as immovable due to the agreement of the Status Quo that no cleric of the six Churches[a] may move, rearrange, or alter any property without the consent of the other five orders.

We mentioned the destruction of history in Ukraine in the PDT, but I was also thinking about all the artifacts lost during the conflicts in Iraq and ISIS. It's weird that on one hand the Holy Land is a great example of the acknowledgement of shared origins and a common human history, but that really only applies to things and not to the actual humans.

Thanks to backlash over a Lizzo (Shad's queen) song, TIL that spaz is considered an ableist insult. Apparently it's short for spastic and is/was used to insult people with medical conditions like cerebral palsy. To me, spaz has always just mean weird.

Now I have to stop referring to my dog as Spazzy Jack on social media before I get cancelled.

I learned the other day that the United States has no official language. Perhaps that is common knowledge, but something I never knew.

There was a whole movement years ago to make English the official language so we didn't have to hear that Spanish language question on phone calls.

ISIS singlehandedly destroyed a staggering amount of history.

It’s 2am and I can’t sleep. I am now learning about monkeys

the most common held theory about how monkeys got to South America is by a raft. A land bridge is also possible but it isn’t the same land bridge that humans used in Alaska since monkeys prefer tropical and tree-dense ecosystems (it’s also why there aren’t any monkeys in the US; they couldn’t cross the deserts of Mexico)

I recommend reading the Ancestor's Tale by Dawkins. He touches on a lot of that stuff throughout the book.

I'm not surprised that the California Roll isn't Japanese but I am surprised that this is the chef who invented it.
I had the honor of enjoying his Omakase in 2010: https://tojos.com/menu

Rodger Penzabene was a songwriter in Motown, who, after finding his wife had cheated on him, wrote I Wish It Would Rain by the Temptations. He then killed himself 10 days after the song’s release. Depressing

TIL that both George Steinbrenner and Al Davis were born on July 4, a year apart (1929 and 1930)

Unfortunately both great owners of franchises that I despise

Drizzle, in the weather sense, refers not to the rate of rainfall but the actual size of the drops. Drizzle droplets are .02" or less in diameter. Any larger and they are rain drops.

the word “mesmerize” originates from Franz Mesmer, a German (thanks a lot Gaucho) physician who believed of the “existence of a natural energy transference occurring between all animated and inanimate objects” he called animal magnetism

technically learned this yesterday from Jeopardy

lol god dammit. Kath was the guitarist of the band Chicago
Kath enjoyed target shooting and by 1978 was regularly carrying guns.[40] Around 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Monday, January 23, after a party at the home of roadie and band technician Don Johnson, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath began to play with his guns. He spun his unloaded .38 revolver on his finger, put it to his temple, and pulled the trigger. Johnson warned Kath several times to be careful. Kath picked up a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it." His last words were, "What do you think I'm gonna do? Blow my brains out?"[36] To calm Johnson's concerns, Kath showed him the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently, unbeknownst to Kath, the gun had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot,[36] at the age of 31.

Yeah, that's a sad story. He was really good, especially on their first album. I really can't stomach much Chicago after the first 2 albums or so.

WTF? I know almost nothing about guns but even I know that you can have an empty 9mm clip but still have a round in the chamber.

longest prison sentence ever served was 68 years and 296 days. Guy went in at 17 in 1911, charged with murder, released in 1980 and died 7 years later
