finally decided to learn what Kwanzaa celebrated
American Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 during the aftermath of the Watts riots[2] as a specifically African-American holiday.[3] Karenga said his goal was to "give blacks an alternative to the existing holiday of Christmas and give blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society."[4] For Karenga, a major figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the creation of such holidays also underscored the essential premise that "you must have a cultural revolution before the violent revolution. The cultural revolution gives identity, purpose, and direction."[5]

During the early years of Kwanzaa, Karenga said it was meant to be an alternative to Christmas. He believed Jesus was psychotic and Christianity was a "White" religion that Black people should shun.

wow that’s…actually kind of shitty

holy **** dude is psycho
In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[22] One of the victims gave testimony of how Karenga and other men tortured her and another woman. The woman described having been stripped naked and beaten with an electrical cord. Karenga's estranged wife, Brenda Lorraine Karenga, testified that she sat on the other woman's stomach while another man forced water into her mouth through a hose.

not that I know anyone who celebrates it but the fact that it’s mainstream enough that most people have heard of it is amazing. This is pretty vile

The use of “nimrod” to refer to someone who’s a geek or loser is believed to be attributed to…Bugs Bunny

“Nimrod” is originally a “great hunter” from the Bible. Bugs used it facetiously to refer to Elmer Fudd, who is a bumbling hunter. Thus, because of Bugs Bunny, the colloquial usage of “Nimrod” changed from something respectable and honorable to a doofus

The difference between different types of molasses. Boil cane juice to extract sugar once and you get light or "A" molasses. Boil again and you get dark or "B" molasses. Boil a third time and you get blackstrap or "C" molasses. Each extraction removes sugar, so light is still pretty sweet while blackstrap barely has any sugar and is actually somewhat bitter. Brer Rabbit Molasses, for example, sells the three types as "mild flavor," "full flavor," and "blackstrap." You need to pick the right type for what you are making. If you're baking something like sweet molasses cookies and use blackstrap, they're probably going to taste terrible, because blackstrap is for stuff where you want the flavor without a lot of sweetness, like in baked beans or barbeque sauces.

I learned about this a few months ago which was a direct result of reading about this

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Molasses_Flood
A large storage tank filled with 2.3 million US gal of molasses, weighing approximately 13,000 short tons, burst, and the resultant wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterwards that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days.

I learned about this because my son is really into the "I Survived..." series of books. They did one on the molasses spill.

On October 2, 1978, Allen was arrested at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport for possession of over 650 grams (1.43 lb) of cocaine. He subsequently pleaded guilty to felony drug trafficking charges and provided the names of other dealers in exchange for a sentence of three to seven years rather than a possible life imprisonment. He was paroled on June 12, 1981, after serving two years and four months in Federal Correctional Institution, Sandstone, in Sandstone, Minnesota.

Mario Kart Wii > Mario Kart 64 > Mario Kart Switch >>>> Mario Kart Wii U

never played the SNES or Double Dash
Way behind on this but I couldn’t play more than 2 consecutive games of Mario Kart without getting motion sickness.

Pressing and holding the number 2 on my Whirlpool microwave silences it. No keypad beep, cook time completed, etc.

Similarly, if you go to a gas station that has the pumps with TV/video playing, you can mute that buy pressing the second button from the top on onw side or the other (depends on the pump model).

This feels like one I should've already known for a while now...........

In March 1991 an Angeleno called George Holliday was standing on his apartment balcony in Lake View Terrace watching the film crew for Terminator 2: Judgment Day shoot the exteriors of the 'Bad To The Bone' biker bar scene at the beginning of the movie; his building can actually be seen in the background of some shots in the final edit.

Later that night, there was a ruckus across the street (which I will not describe), and he grabbed the camera to see what was what. On the same tape with the bootleg Terminator BTS footage, he filmed the infamous Rodney King beating.

After helping supply the war effort, in 1946, Chef Boiardi had too many people employed at his factory. He then sold his canned pasta business to keep everyone employed at the factory

Thoracic surgeon and medical researcher Henry Heimlich, noted for promulgating abdominal thrusts, claimed that back slaps were proven to cause death by lodging foreign objects into the windpipe.[3] The 1982 Yale study by Day, DuBois, and Crelin that persuaded the American Heart Association to stop recommending back blows for dealing with choking was partially funded by Heimlich's own foundation.[4] According to Roger White MD of the Mayo Clinic and American Heart Association (AHA), "There was never any science here. Heimlich overpowered science all along the way with his slick tactics and intimidation, and everyone, including us at the AHA, caved in."[5]

In May 2016, Henry Heimlich, aged 96, claimed to have personally used the maneuver to save the life of a fellow resident at his retirement home in Cincinnati. It was alleged to be either the first or second time Heimlich himself used his namesake maneuver to save the life of someone in a non-simulated choking situation.[11] According to Heimlich's son, Peter M. Heimlich, "both 'rescues' were bogus."[12]

hahahahahahahaha the drama around this is hilarious. The dude was a whackjob
