TIL that Japanese Colonel Takeichi Nishi, who died in action fighting on Iwo Jima, was an Olympic gold medal equestrian jumper at the 1932 Los Angeles games. He also lived in LA for a time, running in the same social circle as Charlie Chaplin.

My college roommate made it as a "question" it the Czech Jeopardy-like game:
He has a very special place in our culture. A mathematician by profession, he is also an author of successful theater plays. The National Theater in Prague, for example, featured his science-themed play titled "Press Space and Continue" in November 2016. Say at least the last name of this mathematician and playwright.
And, of course, none of the contestants knew the answer! :P

That sounds like a character from a Mel Brooks movie.

I've heard of the Eargesplitten Loudenboomer, although I can't remember where. It might have been described in some old issue of G&A or something like that. IIRC, the quest to each 5,000 fps was unsuccessful not because the gun couldn't accelerate bullets that fast, but because the bullets P.O. Ackley was using all disintegrated in mid air before they hit that speed. I also recall that whatever I read said that barrel life was something like 50 rounds or less.

I'd be willing to bet that isn't the most extreme wildcat. Surely someone by now has necked down a .50 BMG to .22. Call it the .22 Bullet Liquefier.

Dwayne Wade is back on the Heat.

Is amazing how avoiding ESPN can lead to such knowledge gaps.

PA has 13,000 year old plants....

The box huckleberry grows in two different locations on the eastern side of rural Perry County, covering several ridges. One colony grows in Losh Run, alongside the Juniata River near Route 322/22. The other colony is protected within the Hoverter & Sholl Box Huckleberry Natural Area in the Tuscarora State Forest, several miles outside the county seat of New Bloomfield.

Of course, the box huckleberry did not grow to be so big overnight. The Losh Run plant’s age is thought to be around 13,000 years old--far older than the giant sequoias. This box huckleberry is even older than the bristlecone pines which, at 5000 years old, are often thought to be the oldest living organisms on earth. While not as old as the Losh Run plant, the younger colony in the Hoverter & Sholl Box Huckleberry Natural Area is well on its way to a great age at 1300 years. The box huckleberry is definitely ancient, and is even thought to be a survivor of the last ice age.

Interesting...I drive 22/322 (or used to) all the time going up to Altoona from down here. Maybe I'll stop and check that out next trip.

I am still "young" based on NHL standards!
According to a Sports Business Journal article from 2017, the average age of fans for MLB in 2016 was 57. For the NFL it was 50, NHL 49 and NBA 42.
(Seriously, do so many retired people watch the games these days???)

They are not terrible in a pinch, although for $3 (or whatever they are), I'd rather just go to McDonald's if I'm craving that.
