Well, after having nearly superhuman vision almost my entire life, I noticed things burring a bit especially at close distances. I'm down to 20/25 vision and the eye doctor said I don't need glasses, but they would be helpful. That said, the frame selection at the shop was pretty crappy. Has anyone bought glasses online? I was checking out Ray Bans and like the look but I'm wary about not being able to try them on in person first.

Warby Parker offers a home try-on option. You can get up to five frames for five days.

Have you taken your WB glasses to an ophthalmologist to see how close the lens are to your true prescription?

It seems like there's a Warby Parker fashion show on the break room every few months. I just slip out with some hot tea, but the ladies seem to enjoy it.

I use zenni optical because they're cheap as s*** and I buy two or three pair and hope that one or two fit well. Once you know what dimensions work best for your face picking things out are easy. One thing to ask your optometrist before ordering online is your pupil distance. It's usually not on your prescription.

20/25? My good eye is more than 10x worse than that. You need nothing.

not sure. my ophthalmologist was giving me the business when i asked for my prescription. he was implicating that they are off by up to 10%. not sure if it was a scare tactic or not; however, he said to bring in any glasses i buy online and he will show me how bad they are

It's money that's not coming to them, so yeah, they're going to try to scare you away from them. When I switched to my new optometrist, I didn't have my Rx card with me (didn't think to bring it for some reason), so they took my glasses that I ordered online and ran a test on them to find the strength. It was in my paper work and when I checked them when I got home they were spot on... Not saying they can't be off, but mine weren't.

It's just a scare tactic. I get the same glasses and contact lenses that they would order for me at half or more off.

I wish I had know about this Warby Parker thing.

I don't need glasses either, my prescription is very slight. I only use them for reading and driving at night.

My doctor has no problem giving me my script. He knows I buy my glasses from WP.

Although the last time I went, he was trying to steer me towards the practice's optical department. He said if I could get the same price (or close to) as I did from Warby Parker, would I use their optical department?

I said yes, but I've yet to see frames I like that are equal to what I can purchase from WP. He countered by saying the lenses the optical dept provided cost less than WP. I said I only wear my glasses around the house or when I'm flying, so I don't need all the bell and whistle lenses. That kind of ended the conversation.

you may just need readers, especially if you're over 40. nowadays I simply call my yearly eye exam the "do I need bifocals yet?" exam. so far no but I know it's coming.

just go by the drug store and pick out some nice reading glasses.

I wear glasses for my desk work. My left eye is something like 20/10 or 20/15, so I've got no problems with distance vision. But closer than about 14 or 15 inches things blur, especially in low light. Which is funny, because the glasses are completely useless for anything beyond arm length; it's like I'm looking at stuff underwater.

Something I recently ran across: the Federal Trade Commission issued regulations called the "Eyeglass Rule" way back in 1992 that require optometrists and ophthalmologists to give you a copy of your prescription immediately following an eye exam—regardless of whether you ask for it or not. The only exception is that the doctor can withhold the prescription until you pay for the exam. The doctor also cannot condition the availability of an eye examination on any demand to buy glasses from the doctor.

https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/busines ... glass-rule

I can say my own ophthalmologist's office is in violation of this rule. I've been going there for years and they've never once offered me a copy of my prescription.

I'd sacrifice the entire state of California if I could have 20/25 vision again. If you don't absolutely need it, i wouldn't get glasses. Your eyes tend to get worse the more you wear glasses -- at least for me.

Thanks for all the help, everyone! I think I'm going to get a pair but only to use when I'm working at the computer in the evenings as that's the only time I notice blurriness. I'm checking out the online sites too. I have a wide (aka fat) face so I need something on the larger side.

I know that Zenni Optical offers an option for you to upload a pic of your face, and if you enter in your pupil distance, it'll show a pretty accurate depiction of what they'll look like on your face.
